Further violence involving English hooligans ( 'fans' would not make for an apt description) in Lille overnight.

It's all warming up to disqualification for England by UEFA. Russia will be looking over their shoulder as well.

How to solve a problem called English hooliganism?

Set the Russians on them, it seems. They were on their toe's pretty sharpish when the Ultras showed up. Now they've left, they have suddenly found their bollocks again.

Still hard to know the truth. The BBC report only quotes a group of mixed nationality people running away from Russians.

The crucial question is why is France doing such a poor job managing this. I don't remember it being so nasty in Poland and Ukraine. And Germany did a great job of the World Cup in 2006. Why didn't the French learn from them?

I think the problem France has is so much of its security focus has had to shift towards terrorism and anti-terror security, that it lacks the capacity to provide the kind of police lockdowns that were available to other police forces in previous tournaments.

It'll be pretty irrelevant if England lose today.

Maybe we should look at creating a 'hooligan' arena and league, where in such people have an outlet where they can legally kick the s**t out of similar minded people, without intruding on the lives of others.

It would allow us to focus police and emergency services more accurately, as well as giving those who want to fight other people, whether they care about football or not, an outlet.

We could extend it to an amateur basis, allowing for any kind of 'trouble seeker' to rock up on certain nights and meet like minded people for fun and fighting, without them ruining everyone elses night out.

And come down very hard on people who are creating trouble at actual grounds.

The French 'security forces;' have been using the same approach for the last 50 years or more. Wait till trouble starts then go in heavy with the batons, tear gas and water cannons. Student demos, trade union marches, most end up the same way. Its the French way!

I think it's a sad state of affairs that we invented hooliganism and are not the top dogs anymore like we were in the 70's.

Maybe you could right a script for a film using this as a basis, if you could get Edward Norton and Brad Pitt to star in it I think you would have a hit on your hands...
