What industry are you in? The type and style of CV that you have often needs to be tailored to the type of role. I have been trying to recruit some managers recently and general rule of thumb is no more than 2 sides of A4 and no need to go back in any detail further than 10 years unless it's really relevant.

Use LinkedIn too, that's good source of info.

Ah Bugger

Recruitment agencies can be quite helpful. Some are better than others, The specialist ones tend to offer the most practical advice

By the way, don't put an apostrophe on a plural in your CV!

Usually I agree with Mr Dragon but not on this occasion. It doesn't matter if your CV goes past two pages as long as it's interesting and relevant. I would include your whole work history but aim to only put in detail relevant to the role for which you are applying. Target your audience. LinkedIn and other sites search on specific words so make sure you use the right buzz words for your audience. Write an overview at the top that gives an idea of your strengths and interests.

Agencies will often help you to finesse your CV. Make sure you keep control though, sometimes they mash them up quite badly.

Good luck. Try to use contacts, more jobs are found that way than through any other medium.

Clean, concise and to the point is key. As someone else stated there's no issue having more than 2 pages but as long as the info is relevant i.e. you do not need 10 bullet points about when you were a paper boy in 1976 (this is not a slight on you personally nor anyone who was a paperboy in 1976 just exaggeration to make my point). Also there's no need to put a photo of yourself on there (again not an attack on the way you may look it is just not necessary).

Arial size 10 or Calbri size 11 is fine. DO NOT use wacky fonts.

Name at the top (this should be in a slightly bigger font i.e. 24). Then address, phone number and email address. You can also include your D.o.B and if you have a clean driving licence. Followed by a summary of your professional experience and why you would be an asset to a company (1-2 paragraphs is fine) followed by your employment history in most recent to last order. Then your education/ qualifications. Then things like hobbies/ interests if they make you stand out (don't put surfing the internet!)

I hope this helps and good luck in your search.

my specialty. can help you if you want to send to me through PM.

it really depends on your industry though.

one simple thing that is frustrating for people who review resumes is the candidates who put all kinds of stuff on there. no one cares what the team, or group, you worked in did. they want to know specifically what YOU did. ok to talk about the big picture project but get to what you're good at.

ex:
*worked on new housing contstruction projects.
*job was to swing hammer at nails
*drove nails through variety of size boards, like a ####ing champion

Have recently got a new job following re-writing my CV. Was previously over 4 pages, and had lots of boring/irrelevant information. My friend totally re-wrote it down to 2 pages and I got head hunted for 2 interviews, and offered a position in London for one of the Big4 accounting and auditing companies!

Most important thing to do in 'free time' is use it constructively to build up new knowledge; skills & understanding e.g. online courses; volunteering (get CRB done to cover yourself) etc. The more strings that you can add to your bow ...and don't be afraid to think & work outside of the box.... then the more marketable you'll become. Enthusiasm and application are key. Good luck...and I mean that.
