By next year the government will be giving away (or squandering some might say) more in foreign aid than it gives to local authorities for spending on public services in this country according to this article: so as care for the sick and elderly are cut, child protection is under enormous pressure and pot holes go unfilled, we will borrow yet more money to fund overseas aid.

Committing the country to give away 0.7% of our national income when essential services at home are being starved of cash is insane. I would say squandering would be the best description. Sure, put some by to help a poor foreign country hit by a natural disaster, but handing over cash to countries like India and pakistan, who can afford to develop nuclear weapons, is madness. NB: I would also say giving the EU so much cash every year is also squandering, but, that's another argument! Just thought, cut foreign "aid" and stop throwing cash at those unelected tossers in Brussels, and we would wipe out our deficit so much quicker...

Whilst some of the recipients of aid may be questionable don't you think that the wealthier nations have a duty to help out financially with the less well off after all any one of us could have been born into starvation in a poor African country rather tha the relative wealth of the UK

This helps to redress imbalances caused by large areas with low populations, heavily populated areas with a lower percentage of people who actually pay their own council tax etc. That's why councils have been permitted to increase local taxes by up to 4% this year, to cover the reductionsbeing made by central government year on year whilst spending on overseas aid increases. No, I don't in principal object to helping poorer countries, but I do object to money (including mine!) being thrown around almost indiscriminately just to meet some kind of financial target for the year, as happened last year. As Matt has posted, we give aid to Nigeria, whilst their people starve and die of malaria for want of nets and they build spaceships; likewise we have been regaled on the news with pictures of slum kids in India..... well how about India spends some of their own cash on helping them out of poverty instead of space missions and nuclear weapons to rattle at pakistan - another aid beneficiary.

It's a noble aim. And I believe we should be giving money to nations so poor that 90% of the population live so far below the poverty line they can't even see it. After all, compared to the billions upon billions we waste on lopsided, overpriced defence deals, PFI and silly projects like HS2 (to name just a few), chucking a few hundred million to help the poorest elements of humanity get basic needs like a supply of clean drinking water is a drop in the ocean, and a far more worthwhile one. However, there are issues about where some of this money goes- to nations who, ultimately, either don't need it, or will mis spend it (particularly in more corrupt nations). The money should be carefully monitored to make sure it is going where it's needed, with the clear understanding that it will stop if it isn't.

How do we 'monitor' the money after it is handed over and what are the penalties for misuse of it? The fact is we can't monitor it and none of the mainstream parties have the desire to enforce any penalties for its misuse. It would be far easier to stop making payments and spend the money at home on matters of national importance, like flood defences, countering ISIS and the renewal of Trident.

Monitoring should be easy. A simple matter of auditing the expenditure- but this costs money. Easier to throw £300 million down the drain, than spending the extra £50 million (or whatever) to monitor where it goes. I certainly don't think we should cut all foreign aid because a fair bit is mis spent. Just as much would be wasted in the UK on consultants and outsourcing on, say, flood defences.

'A simple matter of auditing the expenditure'. In some of the countries the money is going to? Yeah, of course. You are deluded if you think this 'simple matter' can happen.
