More found, kind of invaded by the British and Dutch, and then filled with illegal immigrants, who established their own 'responsible' government who essentially tried to exterminate the indigenous people with waves of ethnic cleansing, land grabs, terrorism and oppressive policies - for almost all of its 200 years. So I'm happy with the 'invaded by the British' if they include the genocide, oppression, murder, terrorism, ethnic cleansing and assorted attempts to exterminate the indigenous peoples, that continued to even deny property rights to the Aboriginals until 1992. Colonisation by the British was fairly sporadic, it was the Gold Rush of the mid 19th century that really lead to people flocking to Australia. Not long after the UK was only responsible for Divorce, Defence, Foreign Affairs and shipping. We'll take invasion, if they take racist genocide and bigotry.

In the big scramble for the planet someone has to be a winner ans someone a loser. We are in a position to indulge in a guilt trip about the colonial past because we were the winners. Better that than being the losers. Harsh I know but the struggle for resources and global dominance is an on going process that one always wants to win and one dare not lose.

Indeed, and it wasn't really the UK that were total c**ts to the indigenous peoples for 150 odd years of its 200 years history... That was the Australians. Basically 'stralia was the wild west with funnier accents.
