Another curious episode from the left: The irony is that Tatchell is a defender of free speech, one of the few people who speak on the subject who is worth listening too. I don't believe for a minute Tatchell is guilty of what he is accused of here.

She (the union rep) seems to want to only debate with people that agree with her, which is hardly a debate is it? If Tatchell has been racist and transphobic then she should welcome the chance to debate this with him.

If you've ever attended university, as a leftie, then invariably you'll have the horror that is the run in with the 'Student Unionistas' types. Its almost a psychiatric disorder among young people who read a book on feminism or Marxism, where in they suddenly decide they're the source by which the world will change and that they are the 'new cause - Problem is they typically have read a few books, a phamplet or two and wiki'd the lunatic fringe - Its much easier to read the Scum Manifesto, than to read Social Theory of Gender.

For my sins, I looked her up on twitter last night. Couldn't find her, but found a friend and union colleague saying how disgraceful it was that it had been made public. Simple answer : don't say it if you don't want it public.

Unfortunately there seems to be no correlation between academic ability and sense.

Same student logic that tried to gag Germaine Greer for her supposedly 'transphobic' remark that, in her opinion, surgically removing a man's appendage doesn't necessarily make that person a woman. ie there's more to being a woman than the bits. The correct way to deal with students:

They spend far too much time attending events, organising protests etc than they do studying. Of course sense is itself a value judgement, based on how much someone 'agrees' with another's opinion or point of view, irrespective of evidence that its false. So, scientifically speaking, there is no correlation between academic ability and sense.

When I was a student, in higher education, the bette noir of the NUS was psychologist Hans Eysenck, for his frankly risible views on race and intelligence. But by disrupting his lectures and refusing to allow debate with him on academic premises, the NUS made themselves look like, in my view, a facist organisation. Better that such views be shown for what they are by reasoned argument than by attempting to suppress them. That is not to suggest that either Tatchell or Greer are in any way similar to Eysenck.

There are plenty of left wing persuasion who think the whole episode is a sorry arse.

I agree. It's better to let people air their views (within the law of course - incitement to hatred or violence shouldn't be allowed) and then allow a debate to take place. If the views are valid they will withstand scrutiny and if they're not they won't.

Tatchell is a nasty vindictive little man who likes to bully people. Would love to punch his lights out.
