I was going up from Crawley to a game once, well crawling really and the excuse just before East Croydon was "Leaves on the tracks" well it didn't stop the Gatwick express bombing down towards the Airport at a rate of knots.

The rails are too hot or cold is another good one they use.

I never understood that. I was on a train which was running half hour late, which crawled in to London Bridge at 1MPH after other trains had sped past which would have ended up occupying the same platform.

I've had signal failure explained to me as well but I still don't get it. I understand the major safety implications but if you can't establish whether the track is clear, you don't just stop and surely there is a better way of telling e.g. with your eyes or CCTV.

Leaves get mushed up on the line and create a paste... it inhibits a trains ability to take power and when applying the brake. Massive problem for Network Rail.

I get the first train out of Thornton Heath most mornings and the train was delayed, no surprise. The reason being congestion on the track. There were no bloody trains on it so where's the congestion.

Trains run through the night through T/Heath. Any engineering works that over run will cause congestion.

Of their own making when they decided to save money by reducing the amount of growth clearance on embankments.

Well yes... network rail's cuts are having a massive impact on services. Most people blame TOC's, but from what I know 85% of the problems seem to be infrastructure related and/or DFT's fault.
The franchise system doesn't work... companies don't invest in long term problems as the investment needed would never see them benefit plus it would piss off the shareholders... which is the TOC's main concern.
The average commuter doesn't have a clue the real reason why the rail network fails so regularly.
Glad I am out the industry

Not to mention mistaking 750V DC third-rail electrification for a modern technology. Leaves on the line wil be endemic until it's ripped out and replaced with 25kV OHLE.

Then, if what happens up here is any indication, it'll be "signalling problems at Haymarket". That's because they're using 1960s technology for signalling too.
