Has anyone got one of these or a similar fitness 'watch'?

Are they any good?

I see it tracks workouts but does that mean it tracks running or can you actually track things like going to the gym and doing weights? I've tried to look on their website but it's not the most detailed explanations.

Hi JohnB
Try this forum, lots of questions and answers.
[Link]
I've got the Flex, good piece of kit.
It tracks how many steps you take, distance you have walked/run. Calories burned also how long you have been active.
It also has a track exercise logger, where you put in manually, and it works out how many calories you have burned, eg exercise bike.
However you can also buy these on ebay,
Portable Soft Rubber Clip Magnetic Clasp Strap for Fitbit Flex. Just clip in onto one of your trainers
if you use the exercise bike.
Yesterday I walked from my place to watch Palace and back, it was 17300 steps, 8 miles.
I got soaking wet and shin splints, and we lost, happy days...

You're asking me what it's all about, and I can't tell you because I don't know what's going on myself.

I bought a Fitbit Flex for my wife last Christmas and she's addicted to it. She has a number of friends who own one and you join groups to compete against each other.

I have a Garmin Forerunner watch which is good for tracking my running and cycling, has GPS and gives a lot of detail. It doesn't count steps, although a newer one possibly does.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

Fitbits are largely for those people just starting out on improving their fitness. They're ok up to a certain point. My other half bought me the flex but its just sitting on the kitchen side now as I do a fair bit of running and have the Adidas miCoach system; both on my trainers as well as in my football boots. So everything I need is there.

They're good bits of kit; but as I said only if you're wanting to start getting fit as opposed to then taking it more seriously.

For running, I use a Garmin Fenix 2. As well as the Garmin Connect account I have a Strava & runkeeper account that imports the information and are very easy to use. Occasionally for ease, I will just use the Strava App on my phone, depending on your goals / how seriously you want to take your training an app may be all you need.

I have a Fitbit Charge HR. It's got lots of functions that I don't use, but it has an "always on" heart-rate tracker, counts steps and has an exercise mode that tracks workouts. It figures your calorie usage during the day and tracks your sleep at night. It also has a silent alarm feature, which my wife loves. It has a couple of smart***ch features but, because you wear it a little way up your arm so that the HR monitor works, it's not really practical as a watch.

My only quibble is that you have to activate some features (like alarms) on the app and sync to the wristband. I have mine set to be always connected to my phone, so it's not a problem for me. Battery life is very good and it charges extremely quickly; just plugging it in while I shower (it's not shower-proof) keeps it pretty well topped up.

If you want / need GPS run tracking, then - in the Fitbit range - you have to move up to the Surge. It's huge, ugly much more expensive and the so-called smart***ch features are pretty rudimentary. I took one look at it and passed. Also, the issue of where you wear it on your arm is exacerbated with the Surge.

My wife has the Charge, which is the same as mine without the HR monitor. She can wear that down around her wrist so the watch and call/text notification features work for her.

So the profanity policy don't like "smart***ch".

Does "scunthorpe" get through?

Yes, yes it does.

Slightly concerned about my resting heartbeat though, will keep an eye on that.

Thanks for the info. I don't really do much if any cardio, I tend to go to the gym and do an hour of weights four or five times a week. I really wanted something that could measure the amount of calories going out fairly accurately as I use MyFitnessPal to track the calories I eat and that I'm getting the right macros. I couldn't tell if this could do that from their website.

The Fitbit app includes a food tracker and, separately, a water intake tracker. It's the only food tracker I've ever seen/used, but it seems pretty comprehensive to me. It has a bar code reader to make the input of purchased food items pretty slick; for other foods you can search for pre-populated food items or add them manually.

Mate get the 'my fitness pal app', it's well easy. Put in what you weigh, then what you want to weigh and it tells you how many calories you can have.
Type in nearly any food and it tells how many calories, protein etc in them. It's got a bar code reader aswell.
When your in the gym , type in what you've done and for how long and it says how many calories you've burned, they then get added onto your daily allowance.
It also tells you how many steps you've done throughout the day.
I've been going to the gym ages and am in a lot better nick after using the app, just makes it easier to make informed choices. And if you are having a night out, you can hammer the gym/running and not feel as bad.
The fact you are asking at the start of January I'm guessing your just starting , so give this ago as its free.
And if you've just joined Virgin active in Bromley make sure you walk there as us regulars are starting to slash a few of the newbies motors

I already use the myfitnessapp for calorie intake but I find the tracking of exercise is useless. i do like the fact you can scan barcodes of food on it though, even from places like Musclefood.com.

I have tried to put in a full gym session and it doesn't record the calories burnt at all if you do weights and this is what I find difficult. I know roughly what my BMR is but I also lift heavyish weights so would like to see if there was a device out there that could tell me what I am burning accurately, not just in the gym but throughout the day, in order to maintain the mass and only lose body fat.

The best conclusion I can come to at the moment is that fitbit and other devices really are aimed at cardio excercise rather than what I do.
