Unfit to stand trial - was fit enough to still take part in parliamentary debates up to 2014, lucid enough to collect a hundred thousand pounds in expenses and fill his forms out, and still compos mentis to sign over his property deeds to his children thereby putting them out of range of any damages litigation.

Perhaps he has Ernest Saunders doctor ?

Ernest Saunders by the way is still the only documented case of a man recovering from Alzheimers...they shouldn't have freed him they should have dissected him to further medical science

Strange how he is fit enough to still claim his 300 quid a day expenses from the Lords, yet unable to go to court for kiddie fiddling....MP's looking after their own again??? Looks that way! Outrageous decision AGAIN !

The old Saunders defence. I think that if someone actually impliments a diminished responsibility defence, like this, they should really be taken into protected treatment or care, just like they are if they're mentally ill.

Good legal team, some medical experts, and you only have to show an reasonable case of dementia to establish the defence.

Its a bit harsh that if your mentally ill, you could well end up spending 20 plus years in a secure hospital on a much less serious offence, even if you only got a couple of years, but if you have dementia you're basically free to go, and can collect your 200 pounds for passing go etc.

May I address the learned members of the "kangaroo" court?

I'm not defending Janner. If he did what he's accused of,its plainly disgusting.

But,and allowing for the jokes, there could be those who might say it reflects well upon our society that trials can#t proceed against those too ga ga to even understand the charges against them or properly instruct defence lawyers.

"Four eminent clinicians examined Janner on 11 separate occasions throughout 2014 and 2015, the court heard. They found that due to severe dementia, Janner could no longer recognise his children and grandchildren; could not speak, write or watch television; and was reliant upon a carer for his safety and personal hygiene.

*Judge) Openshaw said medical opinion was “all one way”. He said: “All tests have shown a progressive decline in his dementia, with an inevitable and irresistible conclusion that the defendant has advanced and disabling dementia that has deteriorated and is irreversible, and accordingly I find that he is unfit to plead.”

Michael Kopelman, an expert in memory loss and a professor of neuropsychiatry at King’s College London, examined Janner four times on behalf of the Crown Prosecution Service. Summarising Kopelman’s most recent examination, in September this year, the judge said: “He can now hardly speak and when he does it is to make inappropriate, repetitive statements. He scarcely recognised his own family and he has entirely lost his short-term memory. He is unable to give any account of his professional and parliamentary history.”

Dr Kate Humphreys, of St Thomas’ hospital in central London, who also carried out an assessment for the prosecution, said it had been impossible to complete cognitive tests because Janner’s condition was so poor."

Be careful what you wish for before wanting the boundaries that protect us all from being stitched up by a kangaroo court to be eroded too much.Sure, they get abused but the greater interest is in the protections they afford us.

And that's your 'get out' argument right there, Jamie. It certainly explains a lot of your posts.

Exchange Janner for Herbert Von Schinkelstein Aged 96 found living in Brazil for the last 70 odd years & poor old Herbert would be in front of a judge next week

Its a great medical defence, far better than insanity, as it doesn't involve being incarcerated in some form or another. There are people still in secure psychiatric wards ten years into a four year prison sentence.

I don't doubt he is demented to the point of not being able to stand trial. Thing is though, if he was say schizophrenic, he'd still be dependent on recovery before being released into society - for the protection of society.

Pleased. Definitely pleased.

I've never had so much hate for an entire family I know (thankfully) very little about. Other than they're all vacuous media c***s.
