I ask because i do,i felt it was a tradition that i wanted to try and support.I feel that they provide a valuable service to the community delivering milk/fresh orange/eggs/bread and even your Christmas turkey.Plus i believe keeping an eye on the old and vulnerable.Today i checked my bill only to find a pint of milk delivered to you door is 81p,but if i go to Tesco i can pick one up for 45p.We have heard a lot of talk of supporting our dairy farmers, which i want to also do,but is this tesco driving the price so low that they are killing this franchise. So that people who want fresh milk have to pay this price as not enough of us use milkmen any more.

My dad was a milkman and I helped our local Express milkman in Carshalton as a "milkboy" aged 10 to 15 in the 1960's.

Sorry mate, times have moved on... like the Miners and Chimney Sweeps, Milkmen are consigned to history.

It was a nice era when they operated and I take your point about the wider service they provided, but it is a dying industry.

Globalisation affects Dairy Farmers as much as supermarkets trying to screw their suppliers. I would happily pay more for a pint to help farmers and ensure the animals are well treated.

I cancelled mine a few days ago after using the service for 3 years. I didn't mind the cost. It was more the fact that the milkman usually turns up about 1am. I can't stay up all night waiting for him to turn up so the milk usually sits out all night. And now the foxes have started claiming it by pissing all over it. If anyone can lend me a rifle to take out the local foxes, then I will start my order up again

I was only talking about this subject to someone the other day funnily enough. As obviously we don't have them here. I've often wondered why the milkman doesn't cut out the middle man and source his own products. I see no reason why you have to have milk in bottles, you could easily have disposable ones that would save on collecting them. I'd also be tempted to offer people Xmas and Easter hampers where people pay in say 5 quid a week that would bring in a steady revenue stream.

Sadly missed. We also had Clark's bakery delivering a couple of times a week. And then there was the man from Charringtons who used to deliver coke (not the Colombian marching powder type) for the boiler (not the female type) too.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

There were also off licences that delivered too. The digital age isn't as modern as people think!!
