It has been a difficult couple of years for me, it's something im not going to go into detail with here but ive found myself with some real savings for the first time in my life & im looking to quit the dead end job & live the dream for a while & spend a winter season enjoying 50p pints of beer, amazing food, epic scenery, & amazing people of Slovakia whilst living in the mountains.

Does anyone have anyone have advice for trekking across europe, its about an 18 hour drive so im looking to break it up into stops at Brussels, Frankfurt, Prague & then eventually onto Liptovsky Mikulas.
Someone has already recommended story books as music will drive me mad after 6 hours of driving, but literally any advice is appreciated as I have never done anything like this before or ever driven in Europe.

Basically im looking for a decent 4x4 (tops £3000) that will get me there & cope with 2/3ft of snow everyday & anything that I should plan to take with me.

Thanks to everyone in advance.

Dunno about all that but Slovakia has the prettiest girls I have ever seen. Bratislava is lovely but it does get a bit boring in the end. For a city it feels like a small town.

Honda CRVs are good. Skoda manufactures in Slovakia and Yetis are good but not old enough to be cheap.

Maple ive been flying to slovakia for about 12 years now & genuinely love the place all ive seen of Bratislava however is the airport & quick tour of the city on the bus & then the train station.

CRV's are very much on the list.

Why not ship your heavy luggage to Slovakia ahead of your journey, go by train (get one of those cheap Euro rail travel cards) and then buy a suitable motor (LH drive and probably a heck of a lot cheaper over there)when you arrive.

Still an adventure as you can train hop as you please, but cuts out all the boring/tiring driving bit.

this. Buy something local and you will find it easy to sell later. You import a UK car and you will need to bring it back to the UK one day, cos nobody in bratislava will buy it off you. Local number plates will make it easier to blend in. Its a big disadvantage sitting on the wrong side of the vehicle...imagine the cashier at every toll booth, blind spots for overtaking, your headlights etc.

maybe hire a vehicle for a while until you decide. Skoda sounds like good advice, as they will want to keep a good reputation on their own turf.

It is always better to regret something you've done, than something you never did.

Its been a long time since I went to Slovakia, in fact it became the Czech Republic and Sloakia whilst I was in Prague, and loved both countries and the people were fantastic (and the women and countryside are stunning).

I would recommend:

1. Try and stop in Bruges or Gent rather than Brussels.

2. Maybe think of an alternative to Frankfurt. The surroundings are quite picturesque (eg, Königstein-am-Taunus) but the city itself is ugly and there's not much going on.

I would recommend Giessen, Würzburg or Bamberg which are kind of on the way from Belgium to Slovakia, or at least not much more of a diversion than Frankfurt.

This. And avoid Hamburg during the day, and Koln at all times. Hamburg at night, is like Amsterdam on steroids (or at least it was).

outstanding, cheers everyone

Im definitely up for a bit of a road trip as its me & my Girlfriend that are doing it, I will have to head back to england once the snow season has come to an end although I do have a reasonable chance of working as a Mountain bike guide out there for the summer but plan on just taking every day as it comes.

I'll look into changing the places im going to stay at enroute, im not massively worried how long it takes to get there.

I am looking at a Nissan X-Trail later today.
