I always thought The Truman Show was one of the most thought provoking films I've ever seen. The fact that you are the only one in control of your actions, and you are essentially going to have to work everything out for yourself. It also made me feel really weird for a couple of days after watching it.

There's lots of art house films that are very deep - but not always hugely enjoyable for anyone but the most patient and dedicated followers of cinema (Fellini, Passolinni, The Quay brothers - all on my watchlist but not on my recommend list) I'd single these out Diretors Films (off the top of my bonce)
