I'm pretty sure this must breach some sort of discrimination laws.. So basically if you are English, live in England and speak only English you can no longer apply to join The Met..... Mind how you go!! Attachment: Screenshot_2015-07-20-20-00-30_1.jpg (130.29Kb)

That's the PC police for you. I noticed a similar pattern over here. All subway notices on the trains are in every language under the sun from Tagalog thru to Cantonese. Also whilst walking along Roosvelt Avenue in Queens a lot of stores will have vacancies but you must be able to speak Spanish as well as English. It should be a pre requisite of your visa conditions that you speak and write the mother tongue.

Politicians and media pressure have given us lefty liberalism as the default Police management style. Full on suck ups. I've been alienated from my own Police force for a while now. I just don't respect how its managed. Edited by Stirlingsays (20 Jul 2015 9.14pm)

Has anyone ever met a German or Hebrew speaker in this country, who doesn't also speak English? I'd have thought Urdu would be on the list. And what about French? There are loads of people here from countries where French is spoken, Especially much of North and West Africa. I'm afraid it's not discrimination. It doesn't say British people can't apply, just that they must speak one of those languages. I do find it a bit silly though that all applicants must not only be billingual, but that the language in addition to English must be one of only 14 listed. I expect they will relax this rule once they realise that there aren't actually that many people with one of those languages, as well as English, beating a path to the recruitment centre.

that is illegal and indirect racism.....if true. Guessing they consider this indirect route more favourable / acceptable especially since their previous attempts at minority recruitment failed. To be fair it's probably more valuable than simply being the colour or background they're looking for.

Not a chance it will be struck down as discrimination, it will be able to be shown to meet a legitimate aim. Only possible challenge will be from someone speaking Mandarin/French who can rightly argue that there is no justification for their language to be excluded in which case it can be expanded to any second language. Regardless of that, it's ridiculous in both concept as an essential requirement, and application with the selection of languages. It massively narrows down the selection pool. Surely being able to speak to someone compassionately and with understanding in English is more important than being unwelcoming in two languages? With the impact on the selection pool, this sort of dilemma may not be too far down the road.

I was listening to LBC yesterday and a bloke called in to say he's paid £1,000 to do all the training and he was awaiting a start date to be told he will no longer be offered a job. Of course it's quota filling. Bet if you are a gay minority who speaks another language the sky is the limit!
