After some advice from our NY based fans - or anyone who has been there really! I'm there 21/08-28/08 and was hoping to catch a football game. Would you believe that all 5 games played in that period by NY City, NY Red Bulls and NY Cosmos are all away!! Ice hockey and basketball are both close season. I then looked at baseball, watched some on TV and didn't have the foggiest what was going on (not a fan of cricket either - I'm sure there's a connection there......somewhere...) Anyway, I'm struggling to find another NY based football team, are there any? Is there another local team at the same level as the Cosmos? Is there a standard lower (without rocking up to a Sunday morning game (or the US equivalent)? Or is baseball a sport you can only really appreciate whilst watching it live? Cheers

Unlucky mate. Regarding the baseball; I absolutely love sport and made sure to watch one of each of the "big 4" sports when in North America, but goodness me, I couldn't believe how boring it was. Left after the 5th inning and about 2 1/2 hours with the score 0-0 and barely any hits. Would rather have chewed my own arm off than watch it again.

i was going to say to take a train to boston or philly but they're out as well. baseball is it unless you want to tak in a NFL preseason game. that won't be too exciting but you'll meet some interesting folks who will very eagerly ply you with free alcohol. otherwise, it's baseball, which is boring.

Wrong month for him sadly. I went to a Mets game, was actually pretty decent, but think we got lucky. Couple of home runs, and Mets won it in the bottom of the 11th with 2 out.

I like baseball. But then I also like The Sims, Wagner operas and 7 hour Hungarian art house black and white films where nothing really happens.

I liked the cans of beer which are the equivalent to nearly 3 pints! The food was pretty decent too. Had some good seats, and cost us about 30 bucks each.

Go to a (base)ball game. You don't need to understand it; it's a cultural event. The Seventh Inning Stretch (yeah, I know, that's meaningless to you) is as American as apple pie...just go, experience it, and drink it in. You don't have to like fish to understand that visiting England for the first time requires a visit to a chippie; ditto experiencing a ball game stateside. If you really want to know what's going on I can PM you a three paragraph primer as, no doubt, can half of HOL but regardless, you'll take your seat, open your mouth, the English accent will be heard and you'll have a stadium full of people willing to explain every foul, fly and ground ball. Going to the States and watching a third-rate football game instead of a world-class domestic sport is like going to France and ordering a Big Mac; shows little other than why people think Brits are insular. Count me on the side of recommending baseball. It may be boring to the uninitiated, but I actually think low-scoring games are much more fun as it then all becomes about strategy and nuance. Think of it like a day at the cricket - you don't have to see a slog-fest to enjoy it. Neither NY stadia are historic anymore, but I'd suggest going to the Yankees if that's an option. Also, the Mets are an annoying, s***ty club with ignorant, beer stained fans - or so I am lead to believe by Astros fans down here. [Link]
We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football. |

Have supported the Mets since 1980...the N.Y. Underdog. The Yankies have no soul, it's like supporting Man U...
