So I recently started out setting up a little aquarium at home, through a lot of trial and error (and a lot of dead fish) I seem to be in control of the water levels etc now, and my fish all seem happy and loving life.

A few months ago I won a fish at a fair and my daughter chose this splendid little fella who I have in my tank. I just have no idea what type of fish he is.

I thought he was a loach, but he doesn't seem to match any pictures of loaches I see online, other people have said catfish and even some freshwater type of shark. Fact is, no one seems to know.

any of you recognise this species?

Thanks!

is it a salt***er aquarium skatters? If so, it look like a type of clownfish.

But there are some perch hybrids nowadays though which look like 'Nemo' but can survive in freshwater aquariums.

If so, it looks like its probably one of those - a very new species, effectively.

(that would be salt-water, to get round the censor)

Looks like a type of minnow perhaps a rosy red one ( Pimephales promelas ) although the colour looks rather washed. Anyway thats my best guess from the photo

Seeing as the skatman hasn't replied yet, I'm going to try and answer some of these questions...

It doesn't look salt water or tropical, so that leaves fresh water. It does look a bit loachy, but nothing like a catfish. Being a fresh water tank (if that's what it is) it could be anything from a river here. Someone's already mentioned minnow. Stick some breadcrumbs on it and it even looks like whitebait!

I don't think I've helped at all! Though I'm sure it's definitely a fish!

i think it is some sort of gold fish ( which are members of the carp family ) but it looks a bit anemic hence the lighter shading

I'm pretty sure the orange one is fake.

sorry for the late reply.

Yes it's a cold water aquarium, and no I'm not talking about the orange ornament with the fish on.

``At first glance i thought it could be a pearl danio
not sure though was looking at pic on phone so probably wrong

I would say that your ammonia levels may be high as from the picture it is showing signs of ammonia poisoning.
