Hopefully some of the many dog owners on HOL can assist.

Unless the leg can be removed and that gets all of it there's only one likely outcome...either weeks or months you will have to choose when to put the dog down. The vet should know though. If the dog is struggling do it earlier rather than later as it can be a very painful and stressful all round if it's left too long. In meantime take it out and treat it as normal. That way they will carry on as normal wich is when they are happiest.

Firstly, I'm really sorry to hear that. The only downside about having pets is that they're not in our lives long enough, and it bloody hurts when they go. Our dog had an inoperable brain tumour and, selfishly, tried to keep her going for as long as possible on a cocktail of drugs. She would push her head against wall corners to try and relieve the pain - knew what had to be done then I suppose each case is different, but I think you'll know when it's time. All the best.

One of the hardest decisions ever, is making that decision when the time is right. But, the more it hurts, the more it means. Make sure of course in the meantime to make every minute count and provide treats and spoils and fusses. And don't spare you self the pain of being there, with them right at the end. In the long run you'll feel better about being their holding their paw, comforting them as they go. I know I did. Edited by jamiemartin721 (25 Jun 2015 10.24am)

..had my beautiful 10 year old Fox Terrier called Biggles put to sleep on the 2nd of May and it was unbearably painful, she had Kidney failure and we had no idea as she showed no signs...although I do recall saying a few weeks before that she was lighter to pick up, but that was all, she was my everyday working partner and I feel utterly lost without her. So sorry to hear about your dog...but keep a positive attitude-My american bulldog "Biki",had several large tumors appear on het stomach and legs when she was nine years old. The vet said she was too old to operate on and that I should expect her to only last a few months at most..She is still going three years later and as long as she has no pain I would not dream of having her put to sleep...Give Pooch as much love as possible and treasure every moment together, and hopfully he will be around for a long time yet.
Touch my coffee and I will slap you so hard even Google won't be able to find you. |
