I'm sure there have been threads on Football Manager before so I hope this doesn't cross over, but have any of you ever taken the Football Manager/Championship Manager games a bit too seriously?

I have found myself walking about the house like a bear with a sore head and when my girlfriend asks me why, I realise it was because I've lost two games on the bounce in FM.

I also had an assistant manager in the game that had been with me for ages. I started to think of him as a friend. I looked him up on Google to see if he was a real guy and it turned out he was, at some little non-league club. I almost emailed him to say "Hello mate, it's me, I worked with you at Burgess Hill Town" and then remembered I don't know him, he doesn't know me and none of this is real....

Anyone else done anything as pathetic as this or am I the HOL's biggest loser?!

I get where you're coming from. I've grown very attached to some 'players' over the years and there's a definate tendancy to get interrested in reality in the clubs I've managed.....Tranmere, L'Orient, Genoa, Anderlecht and Everton. This is on FIFA Manager 2007 which I've been playing since....2007.
I got really pi55ed off a month ago when Jedinak (signed for £1.25m ) fractured his ankle, ruined my day.
The temptation is always there to go back to the last 'save' but I never do that in FIFA.....unlike some games.

I've felt hurt quite personally when a 27 year old player that I took on from a youth contract is getting shirty with me and wants to leave. I can't have an actual conversation with a pretend person to say "but you've been here your entire career!"

Totally agree..................
I find myself talking to myself as if im telling the guys in the dressing room what I think of them during half time ......... I take a lot of what I do on FM to heart

If I try to sign somebody and he decides to go to another club I end up stalking him.
But I do find myself searching for the odd Gem and yes ive found a few but its always hard to change your system just for 1 player but its worth doing if it can take you better places

I think I go one further. I've been stood at the toilet mid game imagining a real life conversation with my under performing players and sometimes even imaginary press conferences.

Also I made a plausible back story up about how I ended up going from banking to football management!

I used to be ridiculously addicted to FM about 10 years ago, and would often be down the pub watching Soccer Saturday thinking to myself, "I'm sure he signed for so and so" and then remembering the transfer happen in my FM save not in real life.

I know what you mean! I also had a player playing for me on the old Championship Manager game who was amazing. 30 goals a season, captain, full of flair and ability. In real life he signed for my local club Burgess Hill Town several years after. I said to my dad "watch this boy, he is dynamite". He was SH*TE! I think he started two games and made a couple of subs appearances. I think the highlight of his career was hitting the corner flag with a shot instead of just falling over the ball.

The silly thing is, even though he was visibly rubbish I was still defending him because he'd been so good in my game. I kept saying "any minute now, you'll see".

Championship Manager 01-02 was my favourite of the lot.

Me and my mate would spend hours upon hours looking for gems, ‘Stefan Selakovic’ from Sweden and ‘Mark Kerr’ from Falkirk were great cheap young midfielders if I recall correctly.

One season, me, my mate and his cousin managed to do a whole season in 24hrs with me and the cousin getting to the Champions League final. We had chairs set up away from the computer where we both sat and the other mate controlled both teams as we shouted out instructions from our ‘dugouts’. I managed to win in the end and ran up and down the front room joyfully rubbing it in his face. Great days!

Funnily enough, I think that's the one I spent the most time on. Had some real gems at Palace. My love of Rubins, Carlisle and Andrew Martin stem from that game! Wayne Carlisle remains to this day the most versatile player I've ever had in a management sim. I used to use him as a right winger, right back, right sided attacking mid, central midfielder, centre back and sometimes even left back. He allowed me to trim my squad back to bare bones and save loads of cash because he could cover for injuries almost anywhere on the pitch!

I haven't ever set myself up with a profile pic on the new games, but I have genuinely been tempted to take a photo of myself in manager style clothing stood in front of the interview boards at the local football club. I think that'd reach a new peak of my saddo behaviour. I asked on my Facebook whether that'd be a step too far and got the piddle taken out of me by even my nerdiest friends!

I'm won't play MMORPGs and FM anymore, because their impact on me is catastrophic. Playing Eve-Online became a second career, I'd get home and spend 8-12 hours in game earning virtual currency from things like mining, trading and running missions - and in war phases would keep a bottle next to the pc rather than risk going to the toilet.

FM was worse.
