Yes but all these European countries don't speak English, so they can't know what they're talking about. They're never worth listening to with their weird cultures, food and ideas. Only English speaking countries are worth listening to such as the US and Australia. Edited by Orange1290 (24 Sep 2021 3.14pm)

5 million unemployed? I thought Britain wasn't working when there were 1 Million unemployed. How crap are the Tories if they have made the problem so much worse! Its a great time for the nostalgic Brexiter Brigade though, they've taken us back to 1945. Petrol rationing and empty food shelves. Let the good times roll! Meanwhile, if you are a company supplying gas, just say you can't afford to produce anymore. The government will step into its money tree orchard and give you a nice hand out from the taxpayers. Welfare for the rich on the back of VAT and NI increases for working people.

I think the 5m was my mistake never the less almost 2m will end furlough in the next few days, how many of them will be laid off by their companies? There are major challenges ahead for all western economies due to automation and people changing their habits e.g. online shopping. Brexit is an additional challenge for the UK but the government is not restricted by EU rules so it is free to make it's own mistakes or god forbid actually come up with a plan to re-align our economy. The government has caved over HGV drivers when they should have been pressuring big business to start training our own. I don't mind the temporary visa measure but there is no quid pro quo. A smart government would have forced the big companies to agree to train so many thousands of drivers in exchange for this temporary measure. Instead they get a free get out of gaol card.

Very much doubt that EU drivers will come back in any number. It is a rich irony that brexit has failed so badly that the UK is resorting to trying to bribe back the EU workers it was so happy to get rid of.

Correct, only those that no one wants to employ (for various reasons) will volunteer to work in the UK, basically the dregs of the industry as there's plenty of well paid professional commercial driving demand in most European countries right now as the economies of most countries opened up weeks (sometimes months) ago before that of the UK creating a strong and healthy demand for qualified personnel. Coming to a station near you, automated pizza maker. An other example of how the economy is going to change dramatically over the next few years not necessarily for the best. I recently went to a restaurant and was asked to order my meal and pay by app. They bought the meal to my table that is it I guess this cuts down on the staff.

Honda’s ASIMO project showed how service industry jobs can be automated, albeit currently at too high a price.

I was thinking that in a couple of years lorry driving will not be so necessary. I had forgotten about driverless vehicles, which will improve over the next few years too. There will not be much money in any type of driving in the future. F1 perhaps.
