Whereas in a 2014 Pew Research Center survey, 52% of Minnesota adults said that abortion should be legal in all or most cases. I wonder what has changed. I have a daughter born at 27 weeks so I have a dog in this fight. The law requires: Before viability, by a trained M.D. After viability, must be performed in the hospital. After the 20th week, 2nd M.D. must be immediately accessible for any resulting live birth. Does this bring Minnesota into line with the UK? You can perform an abortion after 24 weeks where there is a risk to life or of permanent injury for the pregnant woman or substantial risk that, if the child were born, he or she would "suffer from such physical or mental abnormalities as to be seriously handicapped". This is not done lightly and has to involve a competent physician. I suspect this is yet another dog whistle load of nonsense coming from the huge, nasty, well-funded and ultra conservative anti-abortion lobby in the US. I very much doubt a Doctor would abort a 27 week gestation foetus unless it is likely to be a still birth or to suffer very extreme disability. I respect the discussion but to be honest if I debate the whole abortion topic it's an area that just gets me depressed. I probably shouldn't have put the link up. I hope your daughter is doing well, I take it this was some time ago, how old is she now if you don't mind me asking? Edited by Stirlingsays (01 Feb 2023 2.17pm)

Her head is a bit flat on one side due to lying on it as a premature baby. It was out of the amniotic fluid too early so the skull wasn't hard enough. I kept turning her over, she kept turning back. Apart from that, she seems pretty good. It's hard to know if there were any effects, for example on the lungs which is common, but it appears not. I have previously mentioned her, she's a total bulldozer in life. A fighter and a survivor it seems. Note that she was in what was then called SCBU for 9 weeks in what was then called Mayday. It was absolutely fabulous. Way beyond any other experience we have had there. And being 24 years ago, things weren't as well developed in terms of looking after prems then. FYI, some more info on abortion, don't let yourself be a mouthpiece for nasty American extremists. You are getting to sound like Elgin and supporting the insupportable re Russia. The proportion of abortions that are performed at under 10 weeks has continued to increase since 2010. In 2020, 88% of abortions were performed under 10 weeks, increasing from 82% in 2019 and 77% in 2010. In comparison, abortions performed at 10-12 weeks decreased from 9% in 2019 to 6% in 2020. The percentage performed at 20 weeks and over decreased from 2% in 2019 to 1% in 2020. The legal limit for a woman having an abortion is 24 weeks gestation. This is the point at which the foetus is viable outside the mother's body (this comes from Dept of Health and Social Care and could be debated). Abortions may be performed after 24 weeks in certain circumstances, for example, if the mother's life is at risk or the child would be born severely disabled. Abortions where gestation is 24 weeks or over account for a very small number of abortions (0.1% of the total). There were 236 such abortions in 2020.

We won't agree on what is extreme, personally I think I'm part of the sensible conservative centre and view not being a neo con as a positive.....Been there, done that, learnt from it. However, I accept that my personal views on abortion and its limits are probably lower than the majority of people. I don't agree with UK law. However, this is a personal conviction. However, that's another debate and one I would prefer to avoid. As we know premature births can come with complications (and weirdly in some circumstances advantages) so I'm happy that your daughter is now a healthy adult.

Lefties love to promote abortion. and yet look at societies that lost their fertility. Germany, Italy, Japan. all getting ancient, losing their nation, their culture, their future. No native young people. which then opens the doors to mass immigration and again, the loss of an ancient culture.

France, Netherlands, England Abortion changes a society in ways that are not always predictable

Insane. Never forget that the people who make these decisions mostly come through our universities and our politicians have allowed the ideologies that taught them this crap to flourish there.

Begs the question, why, why, why ?
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |
