I've said it before, the length of time left on his contract is largely a red herring. Is £8 million a lot for what is as near as dammit a proven PL goal scorer? No If we signed him in the summer we would still pay a small fortune in signing on fees and wages. The goals he could provide are potentially the difference between finishing 6/7 to 12/13 and that alone is worth about £8 million. Then you have theft that we become a more attractive proposition to potential new players. Plenty of people get excited at being linked to players from Juve or Marseille when they'll cost more and more of a risk. We should stick to trying to maintain a "British Spine" unless someone is already PL proven.

I usually agree with all of your posts and I almost agree with this, but I am not almost as certain as you. I just think history tells us that more often than not, these kinds of deals get done. There is always a solution all parties will agree too as long as they're willing to negotiate. Quote Rudi Hedman at 04 Jan 2016 11.04am
The reason is that QPR want quite a bit for him and he'll want quite a bit for his signing on fee. How much will either be prepared to forego, or is it just added and added to get closer to £15mil? I think the lie of the land has changed since September. The problem is no longer QPR; if it breaks down, it will be Austin's demands. As long they were realistically trying to bounce back at the first attempt, QPR had a reason either not to sell Austin or demand a high fee so they could replace him with someone of equal value. If they were between 1st and 5th (say) in the Championship now, it'd be worth gambling losing the transfer fee against the money they'd get if they went up, which they would feel Austin would help them to secure. With QPR more or less out of the promotion race barring a long-shot, they are now more or less certain to lose Austin in the summer for no return at all. So I think from the Rangers perspective, they will now want the money to invest in rebuilding their squad for a promotion challenge next year. Austin is the real issue because he is after what's best for him; not what's best for QPR. So it is his demands that we will have to meet. I suspect we could fairly easily agree terms with QPR but negotiations with the player would be tough. If we could reach agreement with the player, I very much doubt the deal would fail because we couldn't agree a fee with QPR. They now have a vested interest in sorting this out. Quote Rudi Hedman at 04 Jan 2016 11.04am
Then do you get a private word between Parish, Pardew, agent and Austin because they could get Remy for that in June so may as well wait for Remy for £15mil or Austin for £5mil. I think it's all give and take. The first and most important thing influencing what we do is how badly Pardew wants someone now which really boils down to "is he happy to settle for 8th-12th place and take a long-term view of transfers or does he feel a European/top 6 place is in within reach and we should go for it at all costs." If the latter, the necessary words will doubtless be had and we will bring in a top quality striker. Quote Rudi Hedman at 04 Jan 2016 11.04am
It'll then rely on clubs nearby wanting him and not the likes of Villa or Sunderland. And he has knee problems. So, £8mil or a bit less and £5mil signing on fee or a bit less for someone with knee issues and available in 5 months for £5mil? Well, personally Austin has never been one I've wanted to sign but if Pards thinks he is the answer, then I think the numbers above will probably not stand in the way of a deal.

Let's be realistic. QPR were talking about 12 million in the summer and will now take less. Being realistic, I suspect that will be presented in public as 8 million (a sop to the fans) but the reality is that usually means closer to 6 or 7 million. Remember also that in most transfers, 1/2 is paid up front and the rest in installments so the immediate cost to Palace is then 3-3.5 million. Let's say QPR take one of our players as a makeweight (take your pick from Gayle, Campbell, Mariappa, etc.) Might not happen, but it's possible. Say that player is valued at 2 million. Now, we're down to possibly 4 million (or less), on top of which we've got someone's salary off the books. Austin, meantime, is going to want his signing-on fee. Let's say 5 million. But no one wants a taxable sum of 5 million quid in one go so that's going to be paid in installments over a number of years and, with negotiations in mind, some of it is probably going to be incentivised. It might be that we offer 3.5 million guaranteed that rises to 6 million instead of 5 if he scored 20 goals in the Prem. You get the idea. The real way these things work out is not the made-up numbers you see in the papers. In the end, using roughly the example above, we buy Austin for 3.5 million in cash and a similar amount (or less) in up front signing fee. The balance of both is written off in the summer anyway because if we turn another profit this year (which we will) then monies owed in transfer fees will be a useful way of reducing our taxable income. My only real point here is to show that there are plenty of reasons this deal can get done. That doesn't mean it will be, but it does mean many of the reasons people think are issues are not issues at all. Edited by sydtheeagle (04 Jan 2016 4.51pm)

I just cant see the sense in buying Austin for 6 or 8 mill now when he is free in the summer. At 6-8 mill it's 1 mill per month. For it to be worth it having Austin would have to make a 8 place difference in the table between ow and the end of the season (with each Premier place being worth approx 1 mill more each step). He aint going to be that much of a difference, I'd rather we brought in a young potential striker cheaper as cover for CW and go for Austin in the summer. The only way we should go for him now is if there are firm offers on the table for him from other clubs. A number of points. First, 6-8 million is not a lot of money in today's currency for a proven Premier League goal scorer. Second, if we save that money in transfer fee now he'll demand (most of) it as a signing bonus when he's a free agent. That's the way it works, and why players hold on until they're out of contract. Third, (even though I have never wanted Austin personally) he would make a massive difference. Do you really think a proven centre forward up top would not make us a better team? That is madness. And fourth, we don't need a young striker with potential for, likely, the same price. Look how Gayle has worked out. We need the finished article. Bottom line is that Austin will almost certainly move in January. QPR are out of the promotion race. They will take whatever money they can still get. Yes, everyone may publicly demand this and that when it comes to money and fees but these things get resolved. Whether he comes here I don't know (I'd prefer Remy myself) but he will go somewhere.
I think he will stay at QPR as for him its more financially viable to do so unless anyone meets both QPR's asking price AND his wage demands and signing on fee (That will be equivalent to what he will get in the summer). At this point the rush of offers and auction for him may start but I suspect most clubs wont do this (Newcastle might go for it) as they will realize that they can just wait till the summer and go for the same deal minus the transfer fee.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Charlie Austin (rumour)' by james03 I have no reason for this its just my opinion but I hope we don't get him. There is something about him that worries me. I don't know if it's attitude or injury but have a feeling in my gut that we would regret it. I hope if we get him I'm wrong and will obviously support him fully but for me Remy is the one I want over all others.

Remy seems to be injured every 5 minutes as well though. Whoever we get will have some element of risk it probably won't be either of them.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Charlie Austin (rumour)' by james03 Why are people still talking about Remy, Chelsea have said he's not for sale and there hardly likely to change there mind and start selling strikers whilst there in the hole their in right now. Remy is not an option.... And all this about CA knees. Yes his knees might go but Remy has actually been injured more times over both of the last two seasons than Austin has. Austin will be a quality signing, hope Parish can get the deal done. Rather like to see Gayle stay but have a feeling he's going to be a make weight in the deal. If we do keep Gayle we'll have three english strikers, not bad huh.... Edited by Goldfiinger (04 Jan 2016 7.36pm)

I'd agree with Townsend, think he's got talent that Pards could unlock. He'd do well at Palace, would love to see that happen but think we'll be concentrating on a striker / attacking midfielder and CB. Just can't see us signing another winger right now.
