What exactly did de Boer do wrong? I was under the impression that Parish wanted a change in style, possession based. I presume due diligence was applied and the job spec perfectly explained. Because the players couldn't adapt Parish in desperation reached for the only manager available on short notice, one who probably wouldn't have worked again given the debacle against Iceland.
And here we still are.

Tried to change too much too soon on a small club budget. He said in a Palace TV interview on the training ground pitch it would be evolution and not revolution. You’d need to be at least West Ham size to try in the speed FDB did.

Apparently showed little interest in transfer targets. Looks like it showed. I don’t even remember any failed bids. Just no bids.

Apparently very arrogant and difficult to work with. Never good if you haven’t proved yourself.

I do wonder though if that young player who FDB used to embarrass Joel Ward in training was AWB. Must have been. There’s still a way of doing things. Perhaps FDB should have watched ‘The Damned United’

Hodgson was one of England's most successful managers, it's ridiculous to talk of one game against Iceland.

And he came here because he missed the cut and thrust of PL football, it was one lucky break for us.

And what a job he has done here, and there have been plenty of excellent performances along the way.

If he retires or departs CPFC will be marked down for relegation by everyone, correctly.

I'm absolutely shocked. Never heard such words applied to a Dutchman!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

I always expect staying in the premier league to be a struggle.

However after 8 seasons I must say my expectations have not been met. I expected money to be invested in the ground. I expected money to be invested in the 'second team' such that by now we could enjoy watching young hungry players working their way into the first team.

Our wages policy must be wrong if all the premier zillions are being eaten up and we are inexorably heading towards a no-fight relegation. Personally I think Roy is only a small part of the much bigger problem and given the players available I can understand why, this season, we set up the way we do.

I guess what Parish will be asking Roy is what his vision is of how he wants to take us forward if he's still in charge and how long does he see himself managing at the club. At 73 his age has to be taken into account when you are looking at rebuilding the squad, irrespective of whether he's seen as having done a good job or not. If he does stay then we have to look at how we produce more going forward, whether that is new players, or, like at Newcastle, bringing in a new coach to work alongside Roy and Ray. I am not bothered about possession or passing it out from the back, but I want to see more than two shots on goal a game.

I'm not frothing at the mouth for Roy to leave, but I genuinely think while we look more stable than I can ever remember, we are also about as dull as I can ever remember. If Roy can somehow tweak things so we spend just a bit more time on the front foot then I think a lot of people's opinions will soften. However, if Roy's vision is that we can expect more of the same next season then I have no desire for him to stay, even if it is a risk replacing him.

We might be 'on the front foot'more often if Hodgson has used the real talent of Max Meyer properly instead of bringing the boy on and shoving him out on the wing. Meyer was clearly a better player than Luka, McCarthy or Riedewald but never given a run in the side in his best position of centre midfield.

Hodgson gives him the elbow and then moans about a long injury list.

Last year the two England cricketers Sam Billings and Joe Denly spent a couple of days training with Palace. when asked who impressed them most in that time they both said Meyer.

Hodgson's treatment of the lad was a disgrace.

Which leads me back to the thread title:
"What do you actually expect from Palace?"

What I want and what is realistic are two different things.
Staying up every year is first priority, Everything else comes from that. Playing beautiful attacking football is a luxury that comes with very expensive players.

I don't expect much but pleased I've stopped having to look away from the telly every time the opposition have the ball near our goal and that we're staying in games.

As others have pointed out loads of games have become passionless and boring without fans and the arising lack of urgency has affected us all.

Irrespective of how boring everyone thinks it is I'd rather be bored watching us play Man Utd than Barnsley.

I am sure Meyer's opinion of the pairs' cricket ability was just a s valuable as Sam and Joe's of football at a professional level.

How can you say Meyer was a better player and at the same time point out he was never given a run in the side.?

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

It is a bit strong to suggest Max was 'elbowed out' and those cricketers don't get picked either, do they.

A good point though that we could have used him more it just didn't fit because of the physicality of the PL in my opinion.

In an injury crisis, a yearly event, he could well have made his mark.

He should do well with Cologne and who knows German national team again.

3 wins (Wales, Sweden, Ukraine) from 10 games in major competitions.

Draw's included Slovakia, Costa Rica, and Russia.

Didn't win a game at a knock out stage.

First time we went out of the world cup in a group stage.

Lost to Iceland.

England reached it's lowest ebb in terms of supporter engagement under him.

He came here because we were desperate and no one else would touch us. We had a great squad more than capable of survival after losing 4 games (two of which we were expected to win). He basically had to make up a 6 point deficit with a team that had stayed up comfortably for the 4 previous seasons.

He probably should have walked after his second season and he could have walked with his head held high and no question marks over his ability.

Judging by Clinton's comments on Wednesday and early comments from him he's had enough and is going to call it a day at the end of the year.

Let's just hope he decides to go out with a bang rather playing for draws every week, but the fixture list isn't going to be kind to him.

Firstly Max Mayer didn't give an opinion as to their cricketing ability and secondly if you are suggesting that Billings and Denly's opinions of football and footballers aren't valid as they aren't professional footballers why are you spending time on this forum giving your opinion as you aren't a professional footballer either
