News from within the EU. Thought it may be of interest to some on here.

Yeah but weren't we told that the EU doesn't tell countries what to do and that it was just Brexit lies?

Sounds like they are interfering in the internal politics of a member country.

EU made up of largely Socialist countries has a problem with a country that is right wing, who'd have thought!

I understand Hungary is going to have a referendum on the issue. Seems fair enough to me.

Because surely the EU, being the benign institution it is, has no interest in trying to go against whatever the Hungarian people might want?

And you have to ask yourself why in the hell does the EU think it has the right in the first place to intervene in what Hungary decides to teach its school children? Surely that is purely a domestic matter?

If you want a little insight into how the European future might pan out, with seemingly the backing of Washington, look up something called the ' Three Seas Initiative. Gets relatively little coverage here in the UK but offers perhaps an indication of how any future EU fault lines might pan out.

My understanding is that eye-brows are being raised in both Brussels and Moscow by what is starting to emerge and with Poland, in particular, along with Hungary looking to form what could be quite a powerful grouping not only within the EU but in a wider strategic area.

At the moment all pretty boring (unless you are a sad f*** like me) about improving communication infrastructure but the wider connotations of such a grouping beginning to work together offers all kinds of interesting possibilities.

Perhaps, and it is a very fuzzy long-term call, the new Byzantium? But that could just be my overly caffeinated imagination working over-time,

I haven't heard of the Three Seas but your general point is not a surprise. The EU is a club run by the French and the Germans with others hanging onto their tail coats. I would think that even the most ardent EU admirer would admit that at some point a rival power block in the EU will emerge to challenge them.

When it happens and who it will consist of I don't know but I do think it is a reasonable theory.

From what I can make out, then in the wider geopolitical game, Washington sees both Warsaw and Budapest as stronger allies against the Russians than either Berlin or Paris. Or certainly more reliable/pliable.

And with the major gas pipe lines crossing the territory of this 3SI nations...
