No one actually knows. The Big Bang is not seen as the beginning in modern cosmology. You balk at the idea of the universe creating itself in some way, and then you grab a concept like God out of the air and then suggest that it might be the universe. If that is what God is, then you might as well call it nature or physics or energy. What most like to debate is the idea of intelligent design. That is where the root of the issue lies.
