There is an argument for having no wall at all, on the basis that if you take a 'penalty' from anywhere outside the box / D, then it is not as easy to score as you think against a good keeper. If you watch some Brazilian football from the 70s the wall is often strung out with spaces in between, in some cases 2 half walls covering each of the posts with the GK covering the middle and the ball over the top in both corners. Unfortunately Wayne is so 'planted' he never gets a pace across before diving. You’re right, it can’t. But when a free kick is whipped over a wall with pace, dip and accuracy, you have to put your hands up and congratulate the skill of the the free kick taker. If there was no wall with the keeper positioned in the middle, the free kick taker would be free to lace it (with more power and less skill than a free kick over a wall) into either corner and the keeper would still have no chance. You also have to consider that if standing in the middle the keeper can’t see that ball through the wall! The AA free kick was about as perfect as they come and arguably the best in the PL last season. It started about 6ft wide and missed the post by an inch. No keeper in the world would have got near that and there was no issue with WH’s position. It’s bonkers to suggest WH was at fault. WH is not perfect but he’s ok in my opinion. Some are so blinkered in their view of him that he gets stuck when it’s not merited Edited by Goal Machine (09 Aug 2020 9.13pm)

But when the keeper sets up wrong, exposing the glaring hole, a quality striker will exploit that... the point is, set up the wall and position himself so that the kicker has less options and then, skill/luck is taken into account and we cannot complain.
This was once a quality forum.... |

That's all lovely - still not a PL keeper though.

Watching Man U v Copenhagen, most impressed with the Danes keeper, karl-Johan Johnson has made some outstanding saves and blocks. On this evidence would quite happy if we picked him up. Swedish international.

The Bournemouth keeper Ramsdale is on his way to Sheff Utd for £18 million. How much does that make Guaita worth? Worth noting too IF VG goes a decent replacement is going to cost. which means WH would probably be No 1 again.
