My point is we could still play a similar pass and move style we did then - Eze could play the RLC role for example. Obviously Zaha was key to that formation but the players are not massively different. Google the goals from that game - the 1st and 2nd were exceptional, quick passing and movement around the box
We were after Gallagher in the window and he even had his medical but moved to Bats as we obviously decided a CF was more important.
Cabaye was not over rated. He was understated if anything. You watch him and think he is doing very little but look at his stats at the end of the game and he was invariably the top of the stats for interceptions and passes completed. Whenever he was injured we looked a worse team and we have never managed to replace him.
RLC and Gallagher would transform our midfield although I’m sure there are a number of others who could fulfill the roles where we require a bit of youthful exuberance and pace.

I understand your point about the onus being on the players. But in fairness we have so many players behind the ball what are their options for forward passes or building momentum? Ayew does not run in behind defences or seek to play wall passes. He’s the original head down merchant. Townsend is conscientious in his defensive work but is no longer a threat in the final third apart from the occasional flourish. Benteke is not a mobile forward or one who runs the channels. So inevitably Eze and Riedewald have a lack of options when looking forward. Perhaps this will improve with the return of Zaha and Schlupp.
Their lack of options is a fair point, as it is a team game. I mentioned them being pressured by the opposition, and not coping with that . But it’s true to say , that when it comes to being truly creative under pressure there isn’t much throughout the team and that creates pressure of sorts in its self.. Zaha, and Schlupp, do give more in the way of outlets,. But both Readwalde, and Eze, have consistently not been able to make much happen unless the opposition stand off them. If you can’t as a team close the opponent down, high up the pitch putting the pressure on them to play out then the boot is on your own foot. Then it’s a matter of how well you deal with the pressure coming your way ..So it’s not all their fault, it’s happening , but as we see at times they don’t always cope that well. In taking play into the opposition half. Sometimes virtually non existent. The head down approach of Ayew, is hardly surprising , because all to often he is coming deep and having to carry, when quiet honestly the midfield should be making it possible to receive the ball far further up the pitch with more options around him. Even when that has been achieved , and it does happen, another failure area comes into play ball retention. It’s not good enough, and the pressure is back on.

Ayew not doing enough, works his socks off every game and takes foul after foul for the team.
Respectfully disagree 100%

Agreed. Between them, Eze, Townsend and Ayew aren't doing enough. In fact I wonder whether we would be better dropping Eze and one of the other two, moving Riedewald further forward and playing both McCarthy and Kouyate alongside Luka in midfield with Kelly in at CB.

Yes we know who he is. If we could we would play the same way as we did with LC, and Cabaye in the side. The fact is we don’t. It may well be Eze, was expected to give something of LC, to the team, I say something because they are not the same players, Eze, is nowhere near as advanced in development as Loftus, and it shows. Eze , is appearing to be a little limited in some aspects, if we had Gallagher, along with him it might start to work. Hodgson, encouraged Loftus, to international caps, man of the match contributions,. He said , how Roy had helped him develop,. It’s hardly likely Roy is holding Eze, back. If it’s there it will happen.

Probably didn't make myself clear. I accept Ayew works his socks off and gives his all. What I was trying to say was that between them, Eze, Townsend and Ayew aren't ACHIEVING enough. - Eze looks lost most of the time the way we've been playing recently. - Townsend has lost what pace he had and whilst he puts in half-decent performances from time to time, his final ball or decision making is often poor. - As for Ayew, as has been said, he's often too deep when he picks up the ball and has little option but to put his head down and run forward until he gets fouled. We need him to receive the ball further forward, but in order to achieve that we need someone playing in a more forward midfield position who is comfortable on the ball and can see a forward pass. I'd be interested to see how Jairo would perform in that role.

I am no expert so can't talk to your points technically.
For me Ayew always puts in great shift, scores some belters and generally doesn't get the credit he deserves.
Andros hasn't really featured enough for comparison, was interested Tekkers saying he did much better when Andros crossed from the left.
Eze has skill and flair to spare, great delivery of dead ball, but even I can see if we set up in a certain way he has to run around in circles looking to make an impact.
When he and Wilf play together on the left that's full of promise and excitement

The mid field containing Loftus, Cheek, Cabaye, was in a totally different class to what we have now.
Says the guy who previously typed "Loftus, Cheek, Cabeye" - listing 3 players when only 2 exist !!!

Forget the midfield, the squad containing Cabaye & Loftus Cheek was different class to what we have now. Primarily because it was a lot younger & has had very limited investment since then. This is evidenced in the performances under Roy in his first season at the club which were, at times, very good & disprove the notion that he is just another Big Sam or Pulis.
We're the Arthur over ere!

Yes it was a poor effort , even for on the run ,off the cuff response. But if you come on this football site , looking for perfection your not likely to get it either in English language , or in the way Palace go about business on the pitch. Any way I don’t come on here to criticise other peoples literary efforts . Maybe their football knowledge in a mild manner.. But then football is name of the game on this site.
