We can't score. As our visit to Watford showed, there are no easy games. So I cannot feel secure about our position.

I'd just like to know how the Weed can have a superb, if smallish, stadium, look in better shape than us. It's like they are the bigger club now.

Why is money so tight? The wage bill is obviously huge but if you can't make a profit in the EPL WTF can you?

As things stand,I for one am certainly not complacent at all.

As your rightly asserted we have problems in scoring and unless sufficient funds are made available in January, which might be through the sale of Zaha, we could well find ourselves plummeting down the table and in danger of the dreaded drop.

I have been accused on HOL over the years of being negative about our prospects and many have clearly viewed me as a glumbucket and doomster in this respect and maybe I will attract similar sentiments as a result of my comments above!

First thoughts on seeing this....poor Wardy only on 35k.
Second thoughts....hang on, 35k is a decent ANNUAL wage for a lot of people.
Third thoughts....omg Tekkers on 7 mill PA. No goals. Literally obscene when the Arthur needs tearing down and rebuilding.
Fourth thoughts...the premier league is simply a means where clubs redistribute cash from Sky to players and agents, leaving once great clubs like Sunderland completely f#cked. CPFC has had to sell Wan Bissaka to pay interest bill seemingly.
Fifth thoughts... to be fair to the likes of Steve Parish, impossible job.
Sixth thoughts....seasonal spirit all gone.
Well not quite - have a great Christmas everyone!!

Rather than asking if we are headed for doom, I'm more interested to know what it would take to get on a good path.

Because we are not on a good one.

Which clubs are examples to us?

That is largely due to their owner (who's also a fan) having poured in the thick end of £300m (and counting), and doesn't seem to be bothered if he doesn't get it back; if only we could find an owner/owners prepared to provide such largesse.

Leicester has to be the blueprint. They had an exceptional scouting team which is where I feel we completely and utterly lack in.

They have unearthed the likes of Kante & Mahrez and sold for huge profits. They have taken smart risks on players like Maguire and Maddison, one they have sold for huge money and one they could sell for 5 times what they bought him for.

They continue to replace big sales with players more than capable of filling their shoes for a fraction of the price, Maguire sold for £80, Soyuncu bought for £18.

We need to be willing to take calulated risks on incoming transfers instead of signing Benteke or Sakho on £100k plus a week.

They were signings that were needed at the time and also seemed like great deals at the time. I think Sakho has justified his price tag.

Until we can get in a scouting system and DOF that can unearth some gems and buy players that fit with what our on pitch philosophy is, we won't go up a level.

We are always on a knife edge from being the next Stoke, WBA or this season Watford.

You're not wrong, but it seems unlikely he'll let go the reins; he likes the limelight too much it would seem. Someone, probably earlier in this thread, postulated whether he would be prepared to sell his shares for a salaried CEO position; all the glory without the financial commitment, and it would get us out from between the rock and a hard place we're in at the moment?

Good question.

SP used to hold up Southampton and Swansea as models of how to run a smaller club in the PL.

Looking at the league table now I would say there's a couple of clubs above us we could easily trade places with and equally a couple below that I would expect to finish above us. So I think we are looking at 12/13th place providing we keep churning results.

It's a race to 40 ( maybe less ) points that we are competing in. Our competitors - in my opinion - all have their own positives and negatives and I struggle to think of one single club that we can say are an example to Palace.

You could though cherry pick the good bits ;

Brighton have recruited good technical experts e.g. Dan Ashworth
Burnley recruit cheaply and play basic but determined football under a gritty Head Coach
Brighton, Southampton have up to date stadia and Academy facilities
AFC Bournemouth's accountant !

Palace on the other hand ;

Tend to rely on ex players as part of the infrastructure
Have made 2 ' trophy ' signings that have not been as successful as hoped
Have decided to stay put at Selhurst which is proving difficult to redevelop

The consolation prize is the update of the Academy to achieve Cat 1 status.

As opposed to most of the other clubs, we also have inherent disadvantages ;

A multitude of other clubs nearby
The most expensive part of the country to live in = highest wages

I'm getting a headache....

I think we’re a long way from disaster .. we have real issues with Tekkers and Sako bleeding huge amounts of £ from the club and no prospect of any return on the ‘investment’.

Wilf will surely be going in the summer and still zero back up in place. The squad is paper thin and only a credible starting 15 or so players out of the squad.

The academy is producing nothing apart from AWB who we had to sell to service the club debt, little prospect of anyone else. We have players on the books that never get into the starting 11 regardless of how bad we need them.

Roy, maybe one more season? No £ for players, ground improvements shelved, our part owners from across the pond showing zero interest.

It’s not all roses round the front door, but we’re mid table so should secure another season in the premier greed, which is pretty much a poison chalice, hopefully if we do drop out we have contracts in place with players that reflect the new financial position otherwise our wage bill will cripple the club in one season

This isn't strictly true...we have a number of talented players who can make the jump up given the chance and time...but there's the real issue...we have a manager who'd rather stay with a proven formula then give them the chance.

Having said that, we would have seen Tyreck Mitchell on Saturday if he hadn't got injured

Our main objective is to survive in the PL.
Thus far the "Proven formula" has ensured our survival.

And the wage does not include sponsorship deals, or company benefits.

You would also be surprised at how little tax footballers pay. Their accountants set up off-shore companies, into which their wages are paid. They then receive regular tax-free dividends.

Back on topic. SJ said there are many ways to run a football club. You can run on a shoe-string and hope the gamble pays off. Else you can spunk the cash, and if it goes belly-up, everyone goes bankrupt.

If Palace stay up, then their is more profit with the shoestring model.
What I would be concerned about is the potentially crippling wage bill, with players with diminishing transfer returns.
