I can't imagine anybody wishing him to get knocked out if this tournament was held in the off season. As it is we are struggling to book a win and he is playing in a tournament that holds little relevance to the majority of our fan base. It matters to him. I would say that's equally important, if not more so considering it's his life not anybody else's.

Rest him for Saturday I'm not sure any of us think we'll get much there and then he'll be fresh as a daisy for Bournemouth! Wilf can get back to some proper football now at least! Edited by Baldfella (24 Jan 2017 9.45pm)

It's important to him, but I care about Wilf as a Palace player. Particularly in our current situation. If we were comfortably mid table with suitable back up I'd be wishing him all the best but unfortunately that is not where we're at and we desperately need him in the side. Nobody is wishing Wilf any ill personally, just expressing their relief that he is coming back sooner than expected.

It matters to him now but I doubt it will been so much when he's travelling to some god awful place in a World Cup qualifier! "Come on Wilf you've had your fun let's get on with the real business now!"

Is this our 'new system' or was the wing back just an experiment against a very good Everton side to stop them playing. I imagine Wilf will be the first name on the team sheet upon his return. He is after all our best player.

He's hardly Ivory Coast born and bred though is he? It hasn't really been mentioned perhaps because it gives the connotations of racism but the lad has a Croydon accent, has played tournaments for England and this whole Ivory Coast decision came about when he realised his at his prime age now and not going to be a starter for England in the next 2 tournaments. I know we were all baffled when our very own Big Sam chose Townsend over Zaha last year but there was never any doubt of Wilf rejecting the call had it come. I don't think Zaha has been umming and arring about this for a while, there was never any hint of Wilf rejecting England if they wanted him. Also, this may be too cynical but his "other" nationality is one of the top teams in Africa, as I mentioned earlier they won the AFCON last time and Wilf could well see another one in the future. I wonder how patriotic he'd of been had his second nationality been one of the African whipping boys of the competition. Edited by leejaneagles (24 Jan 2017 8.46pm) Sam did not pick Townsend for his one game.

Considering the talent in the IC squad it would seem there was a massive lack of interest from most of the players. 2 draws and a loss. Current holders out in the group stage. It's a massive underperformance from IC and quite embarrassing for them. I'm certainly pleased Wilf will be available sooner than expected and I would think Wilf will make himself available as soon as he feels fit to play because he will certainly want to help the cause regardless of the disappointment he will have over the AFCON result.
