I'm out. Now looking for something else. I wouldn't wish the job on anybody. So please, no more 'shouldn't you be marking' jibes. My wife is a retired senior school teacher - she was in the classroom for 35 years. My daughter left the profession after 2 years but is now working in an educational role away from the classroom. She tells me she is missing teaching her subject and would like to return on a part-time basis, spending the rest of her time tutoring. As you can imagine I have heard a lot about "Teaching" over the years !!!!
My daughter did her degree, then her PGCE and I think went past the NQT stage. She told me that at times it was more like crowd control than teaching with some of the reprobates she had to deal with ! And I have seen at first-hand how much time they spend at home marking, report writing, preparing lessons etc. Finally, teachers can only go on holiday when the schools break up and when they do the prices rocket ! No good deals around at this time !
It's a shame really because it can be very rewarding. Edited by nickgusset (16 Jan 2016 10.21am) Sorry to hear that Nick. Have you any ideas what you would like to do?

Good luck finding a job in the private sector with similar pay, holidays and pension benefits! I will miss the holidays. However I'll get time with my family back.

Private teaching and training is the way to go. Plenty of ex-Teachers go down this route, and with most companies outsourcing a lot of their training there is a lot of call for qualified teachers to provide contract work, especially for those prepared to travel. Check out sites that offer private tutors to adults. Usually around 50-150 per hour for qualified teachers in various subjects. Then you can also pick up training work where you run company training courses that can be very lucrative for a days work. There are various websites that charge its members a flat rate for access to their teacher basis, and then they pay 50-150 an hour for lessons (either at yours or theirs). Wife used to do this, and would probably work about 10 hours a week and pocket about 400 quid a week in cash.

The number of teachers who quit in the 12 months leading up to November 2014 increased by 3,840 to 49,120 - more than the 48,900 who applied to become a teacher. That's a lot innit?
