A very silly article. Firstly, it assumes that everyone is like the person commenting, which they are not. In fact the vast majority don't smoke or want to be anywhere near someone who does. Why do some people want to take the wingeing of an addict seriously ? Edited by TheJudge (15 Aug 2015 10.05am) Isn't a carcinogen.
When it comes to people hooked on addictive substances telling me how they should have the right to pollute the air, I am very intolerant. Smoking has no use other than to facilitate self indulgence. Edited by TheJudge (15 Aug 2015 10.47am)
So a straw man argument followed by a hugely inaccurate assumption. Good work. I have been called a few things, but "Leftie" ?

Enough already. I'm abandoning all of you smokers and smoker enablers to your cloudy, wheezy, stinky, carcinogenic heaven. I'm out.
We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold... |

They have this right, because as citizens they are entitled to use public space, as all citizens are.

I'd imagine that Stalin was pretty pro-smoking, after all you can't personally order the death of everyone. Nazi's were one of the first major anti-smoking campaigners, unless they were smoking 'undesirables'

You get smoke blown in your face or end up down-wind of it walking down a busy street. At least sitting at a bench in a pub garden, your smoking friends are more likely to consciously blow it in the other direction wind permitting. Banning smoking with kids in a car is a sensible move but I don't really know who the pub garden ban is designed to protect. Scummy parents smoking over their kids are on every high-street.

Our rights are balanced against the good of our society. That's what laws are for. Surely you know this. Smoking doesn't harm the 'good of society', in any real meaningful way, and contributes a large amount of revenue. The good of society is protected better by allowing freedom of individuals to make decisions for themselves, than dictating acceptable behavior, especially where consensus of right is divided among the populace. Plus of course, you weren't presenting an argument based on social good and social well being, but on personal distaste and personal opinion.

You state as if a fact that smoking doesn't harm society and then say that my view is just an opinion. News alert. Your assertion is just an opinion as well. The difference is that there is scientific proof that passive smoking is bad for the health. In any case, smoking is not harmless a past time, it is a genuine addiction. It boils down to a group of addicts and their enablers telling us, the majority of non smokers, that we should tolerate their disgusting unhealthy stink because we are mean and small minded not to. Poppycock. Maybe we should allow pubs to open a crack house next to the kiddies play area. That will boost their turnover. Edited by TheJudge (18 Aug 2015 1.23pm)

Poppycock. Maybe we should allow pubs to open a crack house next to the kiddies play area. That will boost their turnover. Edited by TheJudge (18 Aug 2015 1.23pm) An individuals health is not the good of society. Society is a collective of individuals. Collectively it raises revenue for society, from taxation. Also, paradoxically, it reduces the burden on the state in terms of individuals, due to the 33% of smokers who die prematurely (thus reducing the burden in terms of state pension, care provision and the cost of treating late life diseases). See there is an issue you are missing, regarding health, everyone is going to die, sooner or later. So the good of society, and the individual's health are not the same thing. Its also better for the good of society, to allow people the agency of choice, where no definitive consensus can be reached, as opposed to a 'moralist tyranny'. The down side, is that some people find smoking to be distasteful and unpleasant. You also don't have to tolerate their unhealthy stink, as exposure to fresh air renders second hand smoke insignificant, due to the dispersion in open air. Even in a relatively small pub, with a garden, you have plenty of space, generally, to avoid smoke (not least indoors).
