If I was fluent in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or German, I wouldn't be working in England, let alone as a copper. Even with Hebrew I'd probably do one. If I spoke Hebrew, I'd probably work in Israel, two week bank holiday, get in (plus more bank holidays than any other nation). If I spoke Dutch, I'd probably have got that very well paid job in Holland (in IT for an Amsterdam based bank), which almost certainly would have meant I'd been dead by now. Not sure I'd pay a grand to be a copper.
What public sector job would you do? The private sector is very important obviously and I'm not criticising it here.....but if you were to take five years out of your life to 'give back' so to speak. What area would you choose? None, as I spent four years working in the court service. I currently work in Defense (which pays about 50-75% of what I can demand in the Private sector). God help us.

Saved well in excess of half a million pound last year. You'd love what I do, I cut unnecessary waste and expense.

No, I've generally been rationalizing spending and how people work and use data. For example, support costs for the machines that are in service, rather than all the machines the project ever owned....

It is ensuring they are just as effective after all the cuts that is the challenge though of course the consultants have gone by then You of course could be an exception

I don't just consult, I do and measure, then train and handover.

When I trained for the met, it was me and 5 other white English blokes, none of whom spoke second languages. Guess that must have been a politically incorrect 6 months. I'm curious Horsey, why did you drop out? My sergeant found out that I was doing some work for a political party and said I couldn't do any more shifts until I was "politically neutral". She told me I had to quit my job if I wanted to carry on volunteering. The chances of an actual job as a proper copper were pretty slim anyway as I didn't have my independent patrol status. I wasn't that into it and thought it was pretty farcical to pretend that there weren't people in the police who were obviously pretty extreme politically. I was asked to help with Maggie Thatcher's funeral, which rather exposed the fact that the "rules" on political activity weren't properly enforced. I'd probably do it again in a decade or so if the time was right.

Seems a bit harsh to me....I understand the politically neutral thing in terms of doing the job....But I can't imagine you'd be unprofessional like that. Comes across as poor management to me. I hope one day you do choose to serve again, volunteer or not.
