He finished last season well, but was never an adequate replacement for Bolasie. The lack of threat Townsend offered just added to the weight on Wilf, and the apparent absence over the last six months of better offers for the player to consider is telling.

That said, I remain firmly of the view that the club should retain out of contract players, even if only as squad players, unless they are certain they can be replaced with an improvement so I'm a little surprised at this turn of events.

Perhaps we feel we will be buying a new winger in addition to Olise. Perhaps we feel Rak-Sakyi really is good enough already to contribute.

One thing seems clear - Townsend has cited guarantees about playing time as a big consideration for him when he decides on his next contract, suggesting he wants to be somewhere where he is first choice in his position. If he was first choice in his position for Palace, he'd have been offered a contract by now, surely?

When I saw Olise at Reading he wasn't an out-and-out winger at all and played more centrally.I recall Ovie Ejaria offering the width at Reading, but he sees himself more as a No 8 than a winger.

I tend to agree with you. I like Townsend but I feel he has fallen short (just). Not certain what his wages are but I'm pretty certain they are not cheap. If we are serious about trying to lower the average age of the squad and freshen it up then we also have to be brave and release players like him.

I'd rather we used younger players with potential to act as squad players.

I don't disagree about the need to freshen up the squad and lower the age profile. What surprises me however, is the apparent belief this can be done very quickly without major risk. Not all young players that are signed - only one so far - will automatically work in the harsh environment of the PL.

It also surprises me that a club of the size of Palace can simply write off some £60m in transfer fees that were paid out on the likes of Sakko, VA, Wickham, Townsend, Dann, Hennessy and McCarthy. Admittedly the latter 3 were very cheap by todays standards but the other 4 were not. I assume the fees paid out were in fact apportioned over the life of their contracts but nevertheless it is still quite a hit to take. I guess it just shows the shelf lives of footballers is quite short and how quickly circumstances can change in terms of their value.

OK I just looked it up. Townsend was on £80,000 a week. That makes it 4.16 Million in one year.

For the sake of argument if you say purchased a young player from the lower divisions for 3million and paid him £20,000 a week it works out cheaper over the course of a season.

Roy publicly had a bit of a dig at Andros for his punditry work last season and possibly the club aren't too keen on it either. The other factor is that although probably still a solid squad player he no longer represents good value on £50k+ per week, especially when you consider Eze is supposedly on only £30k per week. Seems a decent guy so I wish him well.

Like with everything at the moment, it will be really hard to tell if this is a mistake until we see who comes in. One month, three days and counting...

I'm sure that's true, and looking at the clips on YouTube suggests Olise is similar to Eze in that respect. Thing is, we surely can't play with Eze and Olise in midfield, no matter who the holding player alongside them is, so at least one of them will have to come in off the wing.

PV played with his two wingers very narrow coming in off the wings to run onto passes by Dollberg (CF)who would come deep to collect the ball and release it behind the opposing backline for the wingers to run onto at Nice. Can see the likes of Zaha, Eze and Olise all being very comfortable with that.

From the Talk Sport interview re AT:

So what we do know is Townsend’s next manager will most likely not be British and he won’t be playing in a red kit.

Concluding talks over his future, Townsend revealed he has been given a ‘final offer’ by a club.

He said: “So I’m training somewhere this week.

“I’ve been given a final offer by a club with a deadline of ‘take it or leave it’ by the end of the week.

“So I’m pretty close now. Hopefully in the next week or so I’ll be signed and training somewhere full-time.”

PL.
Not a British manager
Further north

It looks like Wolves to me. Though Norwich could be a possibility I guess.

I think that we have probably made an offer to Townsend and he is unhappy with it. He either thinks he can get better elsewhere or thinks by suggesting he has better offers elsewhere he can make us raise offer.

I think our offer will be a final offer and we will find a cheaper alternative

I was told recently that Ward is close to signing a new contract, Cahill has been offered one and is mulling it over and Townsend will not be offered a new contract and is now looking for a new club.
