From West Brom's perspective. They need to gain 9 points on Brighton, Newcastle, and Fulham to stay up. They need to finishes higher than at least two of those 3. Brighton and Newcastle are plumeting and are the more likely candidates. BFS will still respect the point. I suspect he will want to keep things very tight, perhaps launching a late surge if it's still 0-0 or they are trailing. Being in a relative position of safety, but not quiet there yet, all Woy needs to to is get a point and that's what he will play for. I think we'll play with Benteke and Zaha up front, Ayew on the left, Eze on the right. Despite Ayew and Zaha working well as a combination, we'll revert back to playing slowly out of defence and will not supply Benteke the crosses he needs to thrive. Our midfield pair will be overrun. I suspect BFS won't over commit but will still keep one or two players pressing our defence until we make a mistake and they grab a goal. We were fortunate at the Hawthorn's. Pereira sent of for stupidity and an own goal to equalise.

Only a few weeks ago in conversation with my dear wife she mentioned that she has known me since the early 80s and cannot ever recall me predicting a victory for our team!

A question, though: why do you bother predicting the result when you know that you will be wrong at least half the time?

And while you're online, Willo, I trust you won't mind my pointing out (I hope I'm not mistaken) that you didn't reply to my last post on this topic. I mentioned that before Spurs you had forecast 1 point from our next 4 games and that, as you were forecasting a defeat v. WBA, you must be expecting a point from Everton or Chelsea. Which is it?

My sincere apologies for not replying - I don't have a recollection of your post. If my memory serves me well (Which it often does not!) at the time I believed we might partake in a dour draw against WBA but I have revised my thinking and have predicted a 1-0 defeat. In terms of Everton, prior to their recent 1-0 home win against Southampton they had lost 4 of their previous 5 games at 'Goodison Park' and overall, their Home record is not that impressive.

Quite comfortable 2-0 win. Similar pattern to the Sheffield United game. West Brom really aren’t very good and if they push for a win we will break through them quite frequently

I expect our defending to be a darn sight better than it was against Spurs. If this holds true and with Wilf back in the team, there is room for optimism Does this optimism stretch to a win? No. Even a half match fit Wilf should provide Eze more space to flourish in. Eze aside, however, I cannot see a midfield devoid in imagination creating anything. There has been a lot of chat around Benteke's resurgence, 2 excellent goals in 4 games. However, he has flattered to decieve before, too many times. It's going to take more, a lot more, for me to believe he has returned to anything like his 1st season with us. Not that he's being helped by our midfield. This is why the optimism falls short of a win, despite Wilf's return. My prediction? A bore Nil-Nil draw. Edited by GujiRascal (13 Mar 2021 10.53am)
