As a nation, we really do seem to be in a free fall as nowhere seems to be pleasant even compared to a decade ago. However, I was truly shocked by the state of Croydon on a recent visit ... I won't be in a hurry to go anywhere near the centre again. Is there anywhere nice left to live or visit? We won't all go there to ruin it!

Some great stories so far, seems quite a lot of us have moved away from the SE25 area but have continued to support

I worked in Boston in the late 1980s. My best friend at work was from Liverpool, and got me into English soccer. Palace had just been promoted for the 1989 season, and I liked their name, so I started following them. Palace lost 9-0 at Liverpool, but later, they knocked them out in the FA semi-final. So that was fun revenge. Next season, we were great and finished 3rd, but missed out on Europe due to Hillsborough. I called the club shop and bought jersey, which I still have. This was pre-internet, so not easy to get anything. About 5 years ago, US TV started broadcasting the Premier League live, so I was able to watch all Palace matches for the first time. I've watched every match since on a pay package, even though it's often on early in the morning. I've traveled to London each year for the past 4 years to catch a Palace match. It's a great time, I love it. My wife goes with me, and she loves it too. We see sights for 2 days, and Palace 1 day. People in London are always surprised when I tell them I'm going to a Palace match. They expect to hear Arsenal, Chelsea, or Spurs.

My elder brother starting watching Palace as it was our local (Norwood) However this wasn't a direct line to me becoming a fan as I was adamant to support different teams just so I wasn't following the trends if ygm and had no connection further than my bro (Dad is not a big footy fan). However, one day in a s*** boring french lesson back when I was 14, me and a few of my pals decided to sneak a couple beers and go watch some local champ footy (this was just post administration so still a very rocky period for the club and attendances were not high at this point) First game was against Bristol City (0-0) and it was hands down one of the most dull games I've ever seen. But the fans were amazing, constantly supporting the boys even though the footy wasn't great. You'd think we wouldn't have gone back but I felt some connection to the boys in red and blue and started going regularly (as well as dragging a West Ham & a Spurs fan week in and out for a couple years - FANCY THAT) 9 years down the line, a playoff final and both the semi-and final of the FA cup and what an unbelievable journey it has been. I currently live in Manchester and can't afford a season ticket (and travel every week!) but am saving and hoping to move back to London so I can be with my beloved eagles. I have been very fortunate to see the eagle emerge from its own ashes and rise and rise but I will live and die with this club. I don't care if we go up and down, further down and back up again. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle!!! COYP

Born in Streatham, lived in Norbury until I was 15. My first Palace game was in 1967 vs Norwich and Palace won 6-0, so the die was cast. We moved to Coulsdon, then I got married and moved to Crawley but now I live in France. Had a season ticket for many years but I only get to go to one or two games per season now although I watch every game on a dodgy stream here in rural Normandy. One year I went to pick my season ticket seat at Selhurst and they were replacing the goal posts. The old ones were piled up in broken bits, but I managed to 'acquire' a section about four foot long and it moves house with me everywhere we go and it's still in my shed. There will always be a bit of Palace in my home! I worked in Croydon with someone I believe is now Willo for some years in the early 80's. We have decided to move back to the UK now so I'm very much looking forward to getting to more games once we are back. What a fantastic journey it's been, as in my time I went to some amazing games, including those away wins at Wrexham, Leeds, Sunderland, Chelsea and Stockport, the incredible semi at Villa Park, two FA cup finals and a replay, plus the play-off finals. Having been born -and having lived all my life - just three miles from our ground, I really take my hat off to all of you who routinely undertake lengthy time-consuming journeys so that you can continue with your physical and financial support for the Club. I've been amazed to learn on this thread how many of you super-loyal fans we have.
