Also, how much in welfare is a migrant going to be getting, isn't the top end 25k now (less than 1% of benefits claim's were 25k or more). Given that requires a full raft of benefits including a wife/husband and several kids, once you take housing benefit out of the equation. We should offer a deal. Anyone who does 10 years in the military or civil work is automatically granted citizenship for them, their partner and their children.

I keep hearing how the French benefits system is sooooooooo much more generous than ours. I have to say this is a new one on me, I even remember the mayor of Calais blaming the Calais migrant crisis on our ridiculously generous benefits system. Either way this must stop now. There are plenty of countries in Europe who can take them. We're full and simply can't sustain this mass influx of people, and we must stop giving money away like this. We have people in this country who are British who need our help.

It should also be noted that only a miniscule percentage of refugees make their way to england and that other european countries are already taking far more in than this country. Edited by ghosteagle (11 Aug 2015 4.08pm)

People coming to our shores seeking asylum, I always thought came through authorized channels, direct from refugee centers situated within war zones. These people must be shown kindness, housed, given the necessities to live as decent human beings, and be given free education. They should also be repatriated when their countries are stable and require the skilled artizans to return and rebuild. The vast majority of those people in Calais are not. They are by definition economic migrants. They can afford to pay 00 plus dollars to be trafficked into Europe. If you wish to emigrate there are legitimate channels that everyone else have to use, why should it be different for those across the channel in Calais? Then again, if you've fleeing for your life from an oppressive regime it might be tricky to get all the paperwork in order like a passport etc. A lot of traffickers work on a 'repayment scheme' where in they sell you onto a group in that country, and you work off your debt as an illegal worker (or sex worker). Oppressive regimes and persicutors tend not of been too keen on issuing such people with passports etc and applying to the local embassy for a visa might bring the 'kick-murder' squads a calling.

Thank you for being so honest. Now that you have admitted that your bigoted opinions are based on nothing then hopefully you can move forward, i wish you luck. Statistics: I'm sure that if you use google you can find plenty more articles and proof that the UK is not the "ridiculously generous benefits system" that you have been duped into believing in.

Previously in England refugee status immigrants used to be allowed to work legitimately. I believe that law has changed. Now they would have to work illegally. Also nearly all of their benefits and allowances have been slashed or removed completely. There used to an element of integration - now they are largely assigned to refugee centres etc. Edited by ASCPFC (11 Aug 2015 4.24pm)

I'd agree that this is a factor in people coming to these shores.

A good starting place for Migration data is the migration observatory. They're based in Oxford University. Most migration to the UK is about money, but probably no the case in Asylum applications that are successful. Illegal working migration generally is about 'earning money back home', notably with Triad gangs and those forced into sex work (who typically are lured by prospect of employment in the UK). Most migrantion into the UK is for work, typically mid to high skill workers, working in the UK can reap the benefit of an exchange rate that works in their favour compared to the same job in their home nation. But its important to remember that migration into the UK is Legal Migration (EU and Non-EU, including working visas, students etc). Illegal Workers (Trafficked and self smuggled) Asylum Applicants.

I'd agree that this is a factor in people coming to these shores. I'd suggest that its our very lax punishment for people who employ illegal workers. As typically these people are paid in cash, and when caught aren't on the agents or employers records for PAYE and National Insurance. These people know exactly what they're doing, and if they're rarely receive a fine in excess of 5-10k per worker. They're also the same people who employ people who are on benefits for 10-20 per shift (8-12 hours). The fine is chump change given how much they save against even paying the minimum wage.
