Southgate was chosen by Venables primarily because he had great football intelligence. He was totally inexperienced when he got the Boro job and he has clearly learnt from his mistakes - you can't just take for granted the three at the back system he employed leading up to the last World Cup and how successful it was. I had big doubts before the Croatia game and Southgate rammed it all back down our throats - totally vindicated. You can argue that he should have started Grealish last game and not played Trippier on the left but professor hindsight is always right - it's never that straightforward. Generally I'd say for Palace fans to turn their nose up at Southgate is a serious case of delusions of grandeur - it would be an amazing appointment, but this is very hypothetical.

Southgate is very well suited to his current position.
