this sumer is going to be so interesting...

bearing in mind our last set of published account, without the AWB money we would have lost best part of £40, given covid lost revenue and spending on eze & ferguson, sorloth aside we could be looking at £60m loss these set of delayed accounts.

in my mind, i think anybody assuming we will spend £50m will be very disappointed.

i can see the majority of players given new contracts, mainly for amortisation reasons, but can see sakho, mccarthy, wickham, kelly & hennessey let go to save us approx £250k a week in wages.

we will sign 2 x youngsters & 2 x freebies to replace them.

i genuinely expect us to spend less than £20m this summer, and i am happy with that.

This will be a positive 'Sell' to any prospective new manager.

And that's why Hodgson will still be our manager next season if he wants to be.

So taking Kelly, Jeff and Mac out of it, we're currently looking at losing the following then...

GK - Hennessey, Henderson
CB - Dann, Cahill, Sakho
WB - van Aanholt, Mitchell, Clyne, Ward
CM - McCarthy
WF - Townsend
FW - Batshuayi, Wickham, Benteke

Assuming that Ferguson is going to be fit next season, I'd suggest...

Keep - Mitchell, Clyne, Townsend
Keep on reduced terms - Dann, van Aanholt, Benteke
Get rid of - Hennessey, Henderson, Cahill, Sakho, McCarthy, Batshuayi, Wickham, Ward

Harsh on Ward perhaps who has been great for us but we don't need three right backs plus Kelly who can cover there.

So that potentially leaves us needing a third choice goalkeeper, at least two CBs, another CM (RLC on loan would be ideal) and another striker. Frankly we need another winger option as well.

We can’t get rid of Joel Ward just yet. He’s the type of squad player we need

if we get rid of Wickham and Benteke who would lead the line ? Please don't say Zaha [ who may not be with us next season ] or Ayew who I would like to see leave .

Hell's teeth.
Both Benteke and Wickham are so important to us that they have to be persuaded to remain.
A total of 10 goals for us,between them, in the last 3 seasons.

But how many could Benteke score if we actually played to his strengths

The failure of our forwards IMO is largely down to our poor passing from both central defence and in particular our midfield who appear to simply pass the ball to the forwards and then sit back thinking their job is done. We could have Aguerro up front and we would probably only score a couple more goals a season. We should be spending our money where it is sorely needed which is predominantly central defence and midfield.

I think Batshuyai is lazy, Benteke is limited in his ability and Wickham is constantly injured or borderline so, therefore I no longer have any idea how effective he is. However, given our poor passing generally, our poor link up play with with our forwards and our inability to play to the strengths our strikers actually do have, is killing our scoring opportunities.

I’m tempted to say Benteke could still be prolific in the right set up as I see that in him, but maybe it’s just wishful thinking.

Tufan, Gallagher and/or Loftus-Cheek plus a ball playing centre half (a Sakho without the calamitous events), would transform our team.

We also need an upgrade on the right wing. So 4 quality replacements required minimum plus another if Wilf is off.

I have seen Loftus-Cheek play for Fulham a few times this season and he hasn't been overly impressive at all.

you're right. He looked great and helped us tremendously when he came here on loan. But, he's definately a different player at Fulham. What's happened? Playing time? Injuries? Or is Chelsea's attitude towards him having an adverse effect.

Pity. I still think he could do a job for us with the right manager to motivate him. Someone like Roy for instance. Worked OK last time.
