No mention for Steve Wicks ?!

Or John Lacey ??

If it's '' the best ever '' then I'm going to go for a player who earned his selection the most - Jim Cannon.

As someone mentioned earlier, Sakho during his loan spell was immense and a brought a different dimension to the position.

Cahill is proving to be the freebie of the season though.

I think Scott Dann has done well last couple of matches but I don't think he has much left in him for this level.

I have to say though, there was an at least 2 year period where Dann was our best player which is easy to forget.

I remember when we started yet another season badly 3 or 4 years ago, my memory is terrible, and we played against Bournemouth unable to score a goal at 1-0 down at home. Dann scored the equalising header and I remember thinking it took the pi55 that not only was he the only reason we were still in the match, but as a CB he came up with our goal too where our attacking players failed.

For me that has to put him in the running as I'd argue he has been critical to our longest ever PL stay.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

There was a huge clamour a couple of years ago amongst Palace fans that Scott Dann should be playing for England

Jose Fonte bought a different dimension to the position, he was a good footballer as well as a solid defender. I was very disappointed when he left for Southampton and of course he did go on to play over 250 games for them and I think has been player of the season at least once.

Yeh, the partnership was mostly Coleman and Shaw, which was one of our best partnerships as Shaw was probably one of the top 3 or 4 man markers I have seen. Small by CH standards but having Coleman next to him bought out his best.

The more I think about it, centre half is the one position I have never really worried about. I think we have been pretty well looked after in that position for many years.

Cahill has performed with great aplomb and has proved an astute Free transfer signing.

He of course is playing in a team that is organised and disciplined.Perhaps in a team with a more expansive style he might be exposed at this stage in his career. For our team, setup as it is, he looks comfortable and in control.
As we have witnessed in recent games he still retains that aerial threat in the opposition penalty area.

If he keeps his place v Watford -- and why not after 2 clean sheets? -- Dann is going to be busting his balls to make it 3 blanks in 3. And as others have said, he does always look menacing in the opposition box at corners. Sarr will be a new challenge, mind. But huge competition to start if they all get fit.

I will be somewhat surprised if Dann is not in the starting 11 on Saturday given his recent exploits which have contributed to clean sheets.
