Ok, 1984 is a warning on authoritarianism and thought control by a controlling institution. People are re-educated if they suffer 'wrong think'. How does 1984 reinforce your side of the argument? Edited by Stirlingsays (18 Dec 2017 2.09pm) They're tortured until they agree, and even when they've been re-educated, the state still liquidates them (or more correctly erases them from existence). Big Brother doesn't control thought per se, though it would if it could, it controls all external aspects of peoples lives (and ultimately their existence physically). The end result of authoritarianism, is that ultimately, that it proceeds from power over aspects of lives, to the existence of those lives. So I think its a bit of a hyperbole to use 1984 in the way that the popular culture does as an analogy, whether its for CCTV, new legislation or Political correctness

Cosplay is niche fancy dress, not any fancy dress. Really expensive fancy dress, often akin to seeing your sexual fantasies come to life but still not be interested in touching you.

I think we have decided as a society to stamp out genuine racism, inan attempt to do so, we havegone for a clean sweep, including the fine margins like this. A lot of people who have no racist intent have been caught up in it and its left a lot of people being labelled unfairly. That is unfortunate and rhe resentment its caused is understandable, but racists are desperatly looking for some acceptable middle ground to build from and if we let it happen, then they will take liberties and we will end up with the 'monkey noises at a match is just a part of the culture' days again. I think sometimes its a case of people exercising power and authority disproportionately, because it validates their existence. I'm pretty pro-Political Correctness, but it does annoy me when more modern adherents see it as a blunt tool to hammer their views into others; rather than as a means to create discourse around an issue. In the later, its not about actually taking offence at blacking up, but to discuss the historical history of racism and the preconceptions of ethnicity. The idea being, at the end of the day, you'll never stop people being racist - but you can get them to be more racially aware and sensitive to how others might perceive their actions (and its a very effective tool - because it effectively gets people to question their own preconceptions in a way most people don't). So the whole Ba-ba-Black Sheep, was about getting people to think about how language is not value free - or effectively discussing the work of Potter and Weatherall - without having to learn a lot of social contstructionist theory). So silly and absurd work quite well for political correctness. Problem is, when you adopt the first example, as a means of hammering views into others, you create resistance to change in people (they become defensive).

And the PC Brigade are constantly looking at ways to extend the parameters of what they deem racist in their "Clean sweep". And perhaps what they deem "Fine margins" are at odds with those who would definitely NOT consider themselves as "Racist" in any shape or form. No more for me to add, other than to say enjoy your Christmas and hope you don't get too "Red-faced" due to your alcoholic consumption ! Edited by Willo (18 Dec 2017 2.35pm) I think its pretty reasonable to consider whether black face, or dressing up as a Nazi is acceptable - but I think its more important to question why people would want to black up or dress as a Nazi. I think you can get away with it if you're funny and don't mean anything by it (and in doing so, for example are mocking the Nazis - Which is why I think you can get away with sexy Nazi or nun in a way that you probably couldn't otherwise). But lets be honest, if you were dressing up as a Nazi its not unreasonable to assume that it might offend people who were Jewish, Gay, Disabled, Roma or even had relatives who fought in the war.

Quelle surprise, the same old people coming out with the same old arguments and excuses. The colour of someones skin is not yours to wear as a costume. Grow up and stop being dicks.

In the case of the chap at darts, I really don't think he was mocking ethnicity. As far as I can see he was mocking the politician who happens to be black. If a black chap had "White-faced" wore a Theresa May wig and mocked her in a similar fashion would there have been a similar reaction ? I would have found this quite amusing and certainly not concluded that he was a racist on account of what he had done. Edited by Willo (18 Dec 2017 5.52pm)
