My Cuban-American friend will be celebrating this. She knows what the old and new regime is like to live under, with much of her family still there. For the lefties on here to find any good things to say about the man from the comfort of their homes in England is quite frankly a disgrace. Well said.

Cuba probably was one of the best third world countries to be poor in. Compared to its neighbours in south america and the Batista regime before it its hard to really claim Castro entirely failed the people. Mistakes and things I don't agree with as third world countries go I'd say that Castro and the revolution were largely a success

The US and Cuba had a mutual cold war for decades... Its not just Cuba that was to blame for that

So the understanding from Labour and its supporters and the BBC is... Fascist dictators who kill their own people = bad. Socialist dictators who kill their own people = good.

I think you can't really just reduce it to a dictatorship and the repression. There are other elements to consider beyond that. As far a revolutions and the region, the outcome has been far better than those in the region. I wouldn't say that Cuba is ideal or perfect. But in terms of third world south america its and third world dictatorship s, Cuba is probably one of the better examples. Cuba struggled later in the last century from an inability to adapt its self in line with the demise of the soviet union and returning power to the people and with its treatment of minority groups in Cuba. That said communist Cuba compares well to its third world counter parts (a some first world countries)/in terms of education levels, malnutrition, medicine and social provision
