I have not read much on the Falklands conflict to be honest. The point in the lecture that was of most interest to me was how the language and red line demands the government were making changed even as the task force was approaching and how sovereignty was an issue for negotiation. With splits in the government, it was remarkable that the campaign was successful. You can't ask more of your armed forces. I know who the lecturer is, and I think he is right when it comes to the on-off negotiations before the war. But the Argentinian loss in the war killed off any chance of them getting sovereignty during my lifetime. The services did a fantastic job.
If you come to a fork in the road, take it. |

I'm sorry...I have to say something on this thread. I was there....... WTF do any of you know what went on, what happened? Its all very well pontificating about this that & the other, BUT, as far as im concerned it was a Argie Pilot flying a FRENCH plane loaded with a FRENCH Exorcet Missile that SUNK my ship! I lost a lot of mates then, I saw a very good one have his HEAD blown clean off his shoulders due to the attacks. I still carry my physical injuries 34 years later......! Nuff said
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

It's a ralling cry for any new Argentine government, add oil and it becomes a real diplomatic challenge.

However this is of more interest and a comment on what the Tories have done to the Navy. Falklands Islands left with no Royal Navy warship protection for first time since 1982 conflict

Your a revisionism of history is incorrect and baseless.

"Cuts after the 2010 defence review shed 6,000 sailors from the Royal Navy. Naval chiefs have used the Government’s current defence review to ask the Ministry of Defence for another 2,500 sailors, which they estimate will cost around £125 million a year extra. But Michael Fallon, the Defence Secretary, has told them he wants to limit the increase to around 600 and demanded that in return the Navy get rid of around 300 officers.

I think the whole point is that you should not have been out there if the islands had been protected as they should have been in the first place. They weren't because of the Tory short term cuts. Thatcher went on to gain credit for getting an island back that she lost in the first place. The press don't question why we lost the island in the first place in the same way they didn't question the Iraq dodgy dossier. Because war sells paper and gets dosh from advertising. Rich people make money; and because the press are incompetent at doing what a free press in a democratic society should do, because they are owned by very rich people and have no interest in that roll. I am not an armchair military tactician but I know that Thatcher has left us with island that is now far more symbolically important than strategically important. We could subsidize a lot of steel production for the cost of protecting sparsely populated far away island. How did we end up in this is all I'm saying.

It is because the people of the Falklands are British, they didn't want to live under the auspices of a brutal military junta and Britain had to act to rectify the act of barbarism by the Argentine government. It's funny that when self determinationi is applied to British people, the left think it as unimportant. Also, why should unproductive steel be subsidised? If it is unprofitable, largely because during the years of nationalisation there was zero investment in the plants and piss poor management, throwing more money at it is simply ridiculous. We should be looking at ways to make it profitable or start making something else, like graphene.

As for conflating steel production??? with the issue, don't the likes of the USA apply a 164% (ish) tariff on Chinese steel......The UK is a free market dumping ground in a non free globalised oligopoly.
