Also, if you could inform me as to why they are being 'cunds' also in this particular instance then I will bow to your greater knowledge.
Not sure where in this thread anyone has stated that the UK would be better off economically if we left the EU. Edited by rob1969 (03 Feb 2016 9.57pm)

Radio 4 Today Programme had a section about the planned referendum and Cameron's attempts to change the benefits payments situation for the UK by negotiating with our EU partners. They went to Portsmouth and interviewed loads of migrants from Poland and the rest of Eastern European migrants. To a man, all of them said they would still come here if there were no benefits ever as life in general is better and pay is much higher. It seems that if Cameron hopes his negotiations will create a major reduction in migrants beating a path to the UK to live and work he is sadly mistaken. Vote OUT

If there is a vote and if the vote is to get out, do we know if this will automatically mean that EU residents wont be able to work here without a visa? Could the Tories decide that they will let EU residents work but without being able to claim benefits?

VOTE LEAVE I disagree with that, fixing a decent living wage should in theory at least, making it more viable for UK unemployed to seek these jobs out. I don't have a problem with migration, what I've seen though over the last decade is the government surrender to corporate interests over the interests of UK nationals who are out of work, or in low income jobs. In the periods of boom, they utilised cheap migrant labour rather than unemployed UK nationals - This, for me, was a betrayal by Labour of the working classes. During that period of economic boom was an opportunity to relocate unemployed individuals and families into areas of employment, towards a plan for longer term growth of social interest, rather than shipping in temporary migrant labour.

If the majority did vote to leave you can bet it will somehow take years to actually implement it, and they'll be flooding in right up to the cut off date. After the cut off they'd need to apply for working visas presumably. If the government then waived visa requirements I think they'd get heavily punished at a GE by those who voted to leave the EU, so I doubt they'd do that.

Could the Tories decide that they will let EU residents work but without being able to claim benefits? EU Migrants have to work for around three years to be eligible for benefits. The only non-nationals who are automatically entitled to claim benefits are asylum seekers prior to being granted status. The reason for this, is that UK law forbids them from working.

I don't know about length of residency but we won't turn into the BNP. If we vote out the Tories can stop all benefits to non British citizens. As it is there's no stop to in-work benefits unless this brake comes in on a Brexit and there's a strain on public services. "How long is a piece of string?" Things are already straining. Maybe not compared to other countries but they are for what we're used to/have been in for. They could also make all foreign citizens prove they can speak English, something the Marbella set may be concerned about as English is a problem before Spanish. However, I doubt things will get too Alf Garnett like because if we go for a Swiss type trade agreement for goods (big & small business) and services (our reliance on financial) we'll need to be able to negotiate workable terms.
