The bloke leading the "in" campaign said it is "patriotic" to remain within the EU.

Patriotic letting foreigners make our laws? The bloke's a t***.

By his reasoning I must be a traitor for wanting the UK to be out.

No. All he was saying, and not unreasonably, is that it is in our best economic interest that we stay and to leave would be hurtful in that regard. No one wants us to go backward. Well, maybe some do to fulfil their own agenda. But there really is no point in leaving if we are gong to be worse off.

Nobody is sure if staying in will be in our best economic interest. For starters, if we left, our net annual membership fee amounts to £7 billion in savings. Add on getting rid of the CAP, red tape, fisheries policies, etc, and even more savings are made, all to the benefit of the UK.

Also, getting out means that our own elected government can make our laws.We can decide our own policies. If we don't like the government, we can vote them out. It's called democracy.

Democracy EU style is telling the Irish to vote again because the initial result was not to the EU's liking.

Sorry, it is not patriotic to want to hand over our governance to foreigners.

The sad truth is that factors beyond these shores feed directly into decisions made here. That will happen both in or out of the EU. I can see plus points to leaving, having control of our own borders for instance. I can also see negatives, a 'better the devil you know' take. Alone we will get pushed around just as much if not more.

When corporate coup style deals like Trans-Pacific Partnership come barreling through, if we don't join that we'll get frozen out economically, if we do, then we're beholden to others once again. Whatever we do, the country people are hoping to be part of, will never come to be because it's just not how the world works.

Very good article, not sure the "patriots" would take much notice of it, though. They'll just bang on about the "benefits" of being in the EU", and say how happy they are about more of our laws being made in Brussels. It is interesting that Iceland, Norway and Switzerland are all doing very well outside the EU...

Complicated...not a single issue subject and therefore really not suited to a referendum of the dumbed down variety that we'll undoubtably be offered.

Complicated because we're looking at a Europe being driven by people whose vision of the future is not shared or understood by most citizens.

Complicated because we're looking at a Europe coping with a tide of refugees/migrants whilst trying to agree the limits of national sovereignty; a combination likely to cause hasty and ill-considered moves.

Complicated because we have already largely integrated our business and legal systems. Much of our Transport infrastructure, for instance, is owned by Europen firms. And European Law has changed the direction of British jurisprudence, probably irrevocably.

I'm In but in as an opponant of the vision of Europe run as a Corporate Oligarchy.

Is there a "shake it all about" option?

Good question Hoofy.

As I am a complete idiot on this subject,I need in simple plain English the good and bad of staying in or out of the EU.

Dont forget simple English, little words, short paragraphs.

Lets see how we get on.

Well having read the last couple of days posts,I'm none the wiser.

Since 1945 - Resultant long term peace, relative general stability and being part of the the biggest trade region in the world are my reasons for an 'in' vote if that helps.

The EU has its flaws no doubt but the good far outweighs the bad. Plus, we won't be able to correct those flaws if we are not part of it.

Would have happened anyway.

I really don't know yet - I waver daily (which is a bad sign for the EU, because if you'd asked me a year ago, it was a no-brainer we stay in).

If we leave, that will lead the SNP to have another referendum undoubtedly, and hopefully they'll win this time, and we just just rebuild Hadrian's Wall and be done with it (ironically Scotland will use Brexit as a reason to leave, then the EU won't have them anyway)

Hadn't even thought of that. Definitely voting out. Watching the SNP/Scotland get itself into such a tangle will be hilarious.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Paul... I'm OUT because:-

We cannot control our borders whilst a member of EU. We are full to bursting now and our infrastructure is creaking.

I don't buy the so called economic benefits that immigration brings - for me uncontrolled migration brings more unskilled people than skilled and just drives down wages, which hits the poorest most.

We don't need the EU to trade, we import more than we export to most of our EU partners. If they try to play hardball on our exports we just withdraw our trade with them completely and trade with our former colonial comrades including India and also China where the potential is huge... and the new emerging economies that are keen to do business.

We will save billions by not being a member of the EU. It was originally set up as the "Common Market" a loose trading agreement between likeminded countries. Now it is a federal state with countries like Rumania, Bulgaria and Greece etc being subsidised by the richer northern nations and spending/bureaucracy is out of control.

It seems like a step into the unknown by leaving the EU, but we should have done it years ago. Spend all the savings on improving the NHS.
