Firstly, that nuclear announcement seems like madness. If Putin's behaviour seems so random, within his inner circle, perhaps someone will take the initiative and kill Putin, before he goes too far.
Secondly no one really knows what seems to be happening in battles in Ukraine, except top commanders,(perhaps). Maybe Russia isn't doing too well and wants to dissuade Western allies from tipping the conventional weapon scales in Ukraine's favour.
