I think the biggest difference (aside from price) between Prem crowds at established Prem clubs and Championship games (which I personally much prefer) is that you just don't get the tourists. If you look at the big but comparatively quiet crowds at the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd, etc, there will be a significant number there on corporate jollies, or days out 'to see a game' - people having pictures taken outside the ground etc. Very few go to scunthorpe on a cold Tuesday night in January unless they're pretty serious about supporting their team! Not saying which is better or worse, but I certainly know which I personally prefer. Regarding "don't you care if you win or lose": It's the journey - if you don't have the lows, the highs wouldn't seem so good. I remember being at my brother's house for a kids' party and the men had managed to make themselves scarce and watch Arsenal playing whoever on Sky in a back room - it was the end of the 'unbeatables' record, and there was a kid absolutely inconsolable with 10 minutes to go because Arsenal were losing. His dad explained that in the time he'd been following football they had never lost - I actually felt quite sorry for him. I've always said I'd rather our recent history than Fulham's, for instance - we're always either battling for promotion or to avoid relegation, and sometimes both. There are very few seasons effectively over before Easter. But hey, horses for courses and it's all about what you enjoy - I know for a fact I will got to a far greater number of games when/if we return to the 'lower leagues' than I will in the prem, and cost is a very tiny factor in that.

Oh my god, I thought you were quite a resonable "away fan" poster, but that is the most arrogant statement I have seen. If you don't like the FA cup why don't you pull out and save yourself for the world club cup!

All that aside Chelski, i thought we did well on Saturday , and with some sharper finishing could have got something from the game. Your view ?
I think I heard your fans sing 2 or 3 songs all game whereas we carried on till the end. Is is embarrassing your own manager clapped us away fans but didn't bother with the home fans?

Our massive games this season are against our relegation rivals and as a club with a relatively low % of deluded supporters, we all know this is true.

Well I for one had a great day out at The Bridge last Saturday. A rare opportunity to have pre match drinks with my Chelsea supporting mates, a decent performance from Palace on the pitch and our fans created a great atmosphere in the stadium. The Chelsea contingent all agreed that the home support was poor - indeed they predicted it before the game ! But they are no different to most Premiership clubs going by my experiences this season. Man U - barely knew they were there, Liverpool - an impressive YNWA before lapsing into silence...blimey even West Brom have lost their voices since they established themselves ( or thought they had ). Frankly, I found the fans in the Championship to be more vocal and passionate. Probably because the results of the games are not the foregone conclusion they often are in the Premier. Had to laugh after the Anfield game when I asked a Liverpool fan why they were so quiet compared to how they used to be....'' we only sing in the big matches '' he said.....oh, right....

Edited by chelski (16 Dec 2013 2.08pm) Neither is the atmosphere when you play big teams. Not a massive game for us, why would it be? Just a local game, really. Mourinho said it himself, the support in the ground isn't good. If you just go to matches with the expectation of winning, I feel sorry for you. Going to football isn't all about winning, it's the camaraderie between supporters, meeting up with mates and sharing the experience, not just trophies and wins. I'd rather be on the rollercoaster that is Crystal Palace rather than the soulless club that is Chelsea. Whatever way you dress it up, the club has lost it's soul, and without that, football is pretty pointless.
Ever been to a game where the majority of people around you are so emotional that they were crying because your team won?? No, I didn't mean that there isn't some that do the things that make football, but there's too many tourists that don't and are solely there for the actual football. Of course it's important to win, after some Palace losses I'm a right moody b*stard, but other factors are important in the day as well, and a lot of the people at Stamford Bridge don't have that. it's all relative, we've had an FA Cup final, play off finals, fought relegation, been in administration twice etc. with Champions League, Premier Leagues, beating Barcelona away etc just creates more and more fairweather fans, and also prices more and more supporters out of tickets. Most can't afford to spend money on cup finals, away games, away games abroad and home games etc, so a lot of true Chelsea supporters miss out games at the expense of less passionate Ones

It's all relative really. We have our aims, ambitions and hopes as do all other supporters of other clubs, albeit at different levels. But who would be the happier fans? Us, 'cause we finished 4th from bottom or others whose clubs have maybe not quite reached their targets but nonetheless have achieved more than we,as Palace fans, could only ever dream of. We have had a fair few matches where we have stood as one in a sea of fraught emotion with our future very much in doubt, where had it not gone in our favour,we would be travelling to places no-where near as glamourous as Stamford Bridge etc. then posters like Chelski would probably not grace our boards in debate today. We may be little Palace but we will grab any small positives and guard them as if they were The Crown Jewels. Ollie's Dad,Ash. Edited by OllieMaidstoneEagle (17 Dec 2013 10.23pm)

Ever been to a game where the majority of people around you are so emotional that they were crying because your team won?? Winning all the time certainly doesn't make football more enjoyable. I discovered that last year when our atmosphere's suffered when we were winning and scoring tonnes. Came out of games not feeling all that good because I was disappointed in our Atmosphere, but also because I got used to winning and no longer felt the same relief when we scored or came away with a result. As to the things you mention, I doubt they were any better than: Wembley last year The Amex in the playoffs last year (as a club without any proper rivals, you won't ever appreciate a night like that) Hillsborough 2010 (unlikely you can have been to a game as important to you as this was to us) Protests at LLoyds and Selhurst (Knowing your club has been saved is better than any game) And there are plenty more It's all relative. And for you, success must feel alot less novel than it does for us. And yes, I've been to games where everyone around me cried
I'd rather be a FREE MAN in my grave |
