I think the biggest difference (aside from price) between Prem crowds at established Prem clubs and Championship games (which I personally much prefer) is that you just don't get the tourists.

If you look at the big but comparatively quiet crowds at the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd, etc, there will be a significant number there on corporate jollies, or days out 'to see a game' - people having pictures taken outside the ground etc. Very few go to scunthorpe on a cold Tuesday night in January unless they're pretty serious about supporting their team!

Not saying which is better or worse, but I certainly know which I personally prefer.

Regarding "don't you care if you win or lose": It's the journey - if you don't have the lows, the highs wouldn't seem so good. I remember being at my brother's house for a kids' party and the men had managed to make themselves scarce and watch Arsenal playing whoever on Sky in a back room - it was the end of the 'unbeatables' record, and there was a kid absolutely inconsolable with 10 minutes to go because Arsenal were losing. His dad explained that in the time he'd been following football they had never lost - I actually felt quite sorry for him.

I've always said I'd rather our recent history than Fulham's, for instance - we're always either battling for promotion or to avoid relegation, and sometimes both. There are very few seasons effectively over before Easter. But hey, horses for courses and it's all about what you enjoy - I know for a fact I will got to a far greater number of games when/if we return to the 'lower leagues' than I will in the prem, and cost is a very tiny factor in that.

Lots of valid points and I agree with most of this. The tourist thing is true. I do see people from far places who travel to watch chelsea. That is a consequence of the club becoming a global brand. For me its a double edged sword. The club benefit massively from its globalisation but this can have an affect on the atmosphere at times, notbaly in the lesser games where 'tourist tickets' are easier to get.
In the big games are there have less tourists and the atmosphere is better.
I do actually think that we need to look at the culture in the ground, have safe standing sections and ways of generating a 'noise' culture. You do that a bit at Palace with the section in your holmesdale end.
I have been to many games where the noise and atmosphere are unbelievable.
In terms of journey. We have had our own journeys. The biggest being the champions league, with so many lows before reaching the ultimate high. Undoubtedly having so many lows makes the high so much better. To be honest the FA cup actually became a bit predicatble as we won it so often. The days out are great and the atmosphere is good but not the same as the first time we won it after such a long time.
Football never has constant highs, it will always hit you hard, that makes the winning better.

Yes I agree. I thought you were actually unlucky not to get something out of the game. We lack the finisher to kill teams off but that said, you had good opportunities that were wasted

Is that the kind of "support" you normally get for your home games?

I think I heard your fans sing 2 or 3 songs all game whereas we carried on till the end.

Is is embarrassing your own manager clapped us away fans but didn't bother with the home fans?

None of the above. I'd be the first to accept that the atmosphere when we play the small teams isnt often good. We are expected to win and having experienced so many big games at the bridge playing palace isnt a big motivation for many fans. Of course for you it was a massive game! Atmosphere varies depending on the team and stature of the match. I am sure if you were to play your equivalent, of say, grimsby the atmosphere wouldnt be great either LOL

Edited by chelski (16 Dec 2013 2.08pm)

Not a massive game at all. It's more a game where we expect nothing due to the distortion from the top to the bottom of the league which has been caused largely the dirty money brought in by your owner, and of course all the mega cash from other owners.

Our massive games this season are against our relegation rivals and as a club with a relatively low % of deluded supporters, we all know this is true.

The money (dont accept the dirty money nonsense) from our owner undoubtedly started the process but now we generate huge amounts of money ourselves. This grows yearly and puts us presently 5th in the money stakes world wide(as mentioned in an earlier posting). Like all businesses you have to invest initially and make loses before you see the profits of your investment.
That investment has made us successful in every aspect of our club.

I wouldn't call your level of support and noise successful .
Embarrassing more like.

LOL never heard noise level at games being measured as success or failure. I thought that was measured by success on the field. And actually I have been to many games where the support is fantastic.
Mind you I suppose you need to measure success that way seeing as you dont succeed in any other categories.

You said the investment has made Chelsea successful in every aspect of the club.
Well it's f***ed your atmosphere since you had beard face turn up and chuck his money into a black hole.
Like it or not your fans were completely out sung baited and embarrassed by Palace fans on Saturday .

Well I for one had a great day out at The Bridge last Saturday. A rare opportunity to have pre match drinks with my Chelsea supporting mates, a decent performance from Palace on the pitch and our fans created a great atmosphere in the stadium.

The Chelsea contingent all agreed that the home support was poor - indeed they predicted it before the game ! But they are no different to most Premiership clubs going by my experiences this season.

Man U - barely knew they were there, Liverpool - an impressive YNWA before lapsing into silence...blimey even West Brom have lost their voices since they established themselves ( or thought they had ).

Frankly, I found the fans in the Championship to be more vocal and passionate. Probably because the results of the games are not the foregone conclusion they often are in the Premier.

Had to laugh after the Anfield game when I asked a Liverpool fan why they were so quiet compared to how they used to be....'' we only sing in the big matches '' he said.....oh, right....

To be fair, I agree with this. The culture changes when you play some games. Its the same at most grounds when you play teams like Palace (and not trying to be disrepectful). I have been at Liverpool and its been amazing (the year they beat us in Champions league semi in 2005 was amazing to be fair).
Its definately a negative of the prem in some games

Neither is the atmosphere when you play big teams. Not a massive game for us, why would it be? Just a local game, really.

Mourinho said it himself, the support in the ground isn't good. If you just go to matches with the expectation of winning, I feel sorry for you. Going to football isn't all about winning, it's the camaraderie between supporters, meeting up with mates and sharing the experience, not just trophies and wins. I'd rather be on the rollercoaster that is Crystal Palace rather than the soulless club that is Chelsea. Whatever way you dress it up, the club has lost it's soul, and without that, football is pretty pointless.

Oh and we havent been on a roller coaster!! Give me a break!!! What at utter load of nonsense. You dont think we all meet up, home and away, have a laugh, drink, sing????
Honestly you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Go chat about something else because you no nothing about Chelsea.
Of course football isnt all about winning, but winning does actually make it more enjoyable!! Suppose you dont care if you win or lose?
As for sharing experiences, you'll never appreciate or experience the following:
Barcelona away (2012 and 2006 Champions league)
FA Cup finals (sorry too many to say)
Munich (2012) - you know the Champions league final
Stutgart 1998 - cup winners cup final
Oh there are LOTS more but no space.

Ever been to a game where the majority of people around you are so emotional that they were crying because your team won??

No, I didn't mean that there isn't some that do the things that make football, but there's too many tourists that don't and are solely there for the actual football. Of course it's important to win, after some Palace losses I'm a right moody b*stard, but other factors are important in the day as well, and a lot of the people at Stamford Bridge don't have that.

it's all relative, we've had an FA Cup final, play off finals, fought relegation, been in administration twice etc. with Champions League, Premier Leagues, beating Barcelona away etc just creates more and more fairweather fans, and also prices more and more supporters out of tickets. Most can't afford to spend money on cup finals, away games, away games abroad and home games etc, so a lot of true Chelsea supporters miss out games at the expense of less passionate Ones

It's all relative really. We have our aims, ambitions and hopes as do all other supporters of other clubs, albeit at different levels. But who would be the happier fans? Us, 'cause we finished 4th from bottom or others whose clubs have maybe not quite reached their targets but nonetheless have achieved more than we,as Palace fans, could only ever dream of. We have had a fair few matches where we have stood as one in a sea of fraught emotion with our future very much in doubt, where had it not gone in our favour,we would be travelling to places no-where near as glamourous as Stamford Bridge etc. then posters like Chelski would probably not grace our boards in debate today. We may be little Palace but we will grab any small positives and guard them as if they were The Crown Jewels. Ollie's Dad,Ash.

Winning all the time certainly doesn't make football more enjoyable. I discovered that last year when our atmosphere's suffered when we were winning and scoring tonnes. Came out of games not feeling all that good because I was disappointed in our Atmosphere, but also because I got used to winning and no longer felt the same relief when we scored or came away with a result.

As to the things you mention, I doubt they were any better than:

Wembley last year

The Amex in the playoffs last year (as a club without any proper rivals, you won't ever appreciate a night like that)

Hillsborough 2010 (unlikely you can have been to a game as important to you as this was to us)

Protests at LLoyds and Selhurst (Knowing your club has been saved is better than any game)

And there are plenty more

It's all relative. And for you, success must feel alot less novel than it does for us.

And yes, I've been to games where everyone around me cried

LOL its not arrogants its true. The FA Cup is a fantastic occasion but on the scale of winning things its not top. And having won it regularly recently it becomes a less important trophy. If we fail to win if for a few years its significance increases. Thats common sense really. The 'big one' has been the champions league for us. Thats been 'our journey'! Arrogant - may come over as that but not trying to be so.

Funny how people always say that just before disrespecting you

All that aside Chelski, i thought we did well on Saturday , and with some sharper finishing could have got something from the game. Your view ?

Agree with the relative bit but the pricing thing is not correct. Prices arent that high for season ticket holders and prices have not gone up for a few years. Additionally you get more 'true' chelsea fans on those european away games then at home games.
You are peddling a myth!! The only correct aspect is that we do have more 'tourist' fans but thats a consequence of being world wide club. You too have foreign fans. Do you put them in the same bracket as ours? or is it just that we have more?
