I assume the statue was supposed to indicate that Edward Colston was a great man. He enriched himself through the slave trade resulting in en masse manslaughter. But it was only 19,000 men, women and children on his watch. How many other mass murderers would you think it appropriate to celebrate by a bronze memorial in pride of place? Time to face up to history methinks by removing a nasty stain that we just kind of got used to.

I'm not totally enamoured to Nelson's statue as he was involved and supported tons of deaths. Any chance on yanking that down.

Just stop celebrating slave traders. And yes indeed, it is where we came from. This country was built on slavery. It just doesn’t make me proud.

You cannot erase history. History is constantly reinterpreted as it should be. It is wrong to celebrate such people. It wasn’t e.g. a war, simply paying people to enslave others and then shipping them in inhuman conditions such that many die. Or perhaps we really shouldn’t let stuff like that bother us. How do you feel about modern slavery?

How do you feel about modern slavery? We shoved white boys up chimneys, times have changed, it's called progress and we should remember our past for good and bad.

Strange then how we abolished it 187 years ago....guess we kind of stopped building. Hey, is Africa built on slavery because they didn't stop?
