I think Spurs went for him so that the board could say that they provided the team with a top class manager, so if they didn't win anything it wasn't the boards fault - Spurs are in a difficult position, they are almost there in terms of competing with the very top teams but the financial gap between being an also ran & being able to win something, even for them remains huge - (Seemingly too huge for Daniel Levy to agree to cover) Originally posted by Badger11

Very true: Conte - Had them Top 4, sacked. There's obviously something wrong there and the general consensus seems to be it is the board. Conte always looked as though he was never aboard their ship and I am surprised he stayed/lasted as long as he did. I don't hate Spuds with the same venom I do the other 'bigger' teams so am somewhat empathetic towards their situation. Conte cast as distant and unengaged a figure as PV for me. The types of manager who will keep clubs without any real ambition or ability to deliver it going are few and far between - welcome back Roy.

Palace manager for next season if Roy keeps us afloat? I reckon it will be David Moyes. He'll leave West Ham by mutual consent unless they win the European trophy they are in and stay up reasonably comfortably.

Don't think there was any surprise that Esprito Santo or Mourinho left. In fact both of them and Conte were strange choices, as they tend to play counter attacking football. I know many Spurs fans and they want to win playing attractive football, in fact they have become so used to not winning, that they settle for 4th place and playing good football. Pochettino was having a poor season having massively overperformed with them. Playing attractive football and up there as one of the best in the country for a couple of years. Problem I think Spurs have is that they are probably the weakest of the big 6 and the one's that Newcastle are likely to overhaul first in their quest to become one of the big boys. Spurs have only ever won the League twice, and can't even win the FA Cup these days. I think they may have to accept where they are in the pecking order. Originally posted by Willo

My point was to mirror our own situation. There are not many 'high profile' managers willing to attempt in taking clubs to a 'next level' without backing. Conte clearly felt as though he was not being backed and beyond attempting a fourth place finish, Spurs who have not won anything bar a league cup in however long did not seem to have any ambition beyond the expectance of overachieving, not attractive for any employee. This expectancy of miracles from a club board rings true and a bit too close to home for me. We progressed from a new style of football, a younger, more promising team finishing mid table to welcoming back an old manager to fight relegation after not spending any money on players. I am unfortunately in close proximity to a number of Spurs fans (through family/social networks not location) and we often have similar tales of woe!

Until they sell the club to someone whose prepared to spend big I agree Spurs will bounce between 4-8th. On your other post that Moyes could be be our next manager again i think a good call and I would not be too upset about that.

Moyes may not be the manager to bring a new style of football, but having failed twice with that idea, I wonder if SP and the board will view him as the manager that will get us playing pragmatic football within our budget. I too won't be too disappointed. No point going for a manager who wants to play expansive passing football and then not supporting him with the signings to do so. Originally posted by Badger11
