Chelsea are just up the road, Arsenal and Spurs just across the river.

And your point is? I’m a Palace supporter, not a Hodgson supporter.

You are obviously entitled to your view.
I’ve supported the club for 50 years and in my opinion Hodgson is certainly not the worst but possibly the most overrated manager in that time.
He has one way of playing which is to compress the play in our own half to so there are limited spaces between our players for the opposition to exploit.
Very easy to set up with ten behind the ball every game.
This negates our attacking threat as our wide players spend most of their time as auxiliary full backs.
This is partly a reason for our paucity of goals in first halves.
This system also requires the striker to act as a first line of defence.
This is why Hodgson so values Ayew for his hard work, much of which is done outside the penalty area.
We simply don’t get enough players forward in games to trouble the opposition.
This can only be Hodgson’s tactics.
I can’t accept this way of playing against poor sides like Villa even if it may be understandable against Man City.
When Hodgson’s system doesn’t work as is frequently the case at present he never seeks to change it.
Any team can defend with ten behind the ball but is it too much to hope for a bit more after our length of time in the division?
I’m very content with mid table Premier League after our turbulent history but I don’t think I’m being unreasonable to want to better quality in our play.
Even with gaps in our squad we are capable of this if Hodgson would allow more freedom in our play.

I wonder if the Hodgson supporters would take a similar view of his abilities if they observed another club or country turning in performances under him like we were witnessing every week.
A non Palace supporting friend of mine said to me yesterday ‘how can you watch that rubbish each week? Doesn’t he ever set out to win a game?’
If we lose 8 on the spin turning in woeful performances there won’t even be the consolation of the ends justifying the means as there will be no points to show for the negative defensive tactics.
No doubt his supporters would say it doesn’t matter as we are already safe.

There is no doubt that any football supporter would like to see fast open attractive football comming from their team and winning matches. However to achieve that you need a certain type of player and manager. How many teams in the Premiership provide that? I would say a handful and more importantly these clubs have plenty of funding. The rest of the teams have to make the best of what they have got if they want to remain in the Premiership and that comes down to how the manager sees the best way to use his squad. In our case Roy plays a style which he believes suits the players and keeps us in the league. It is not pretty but has served its purpose.
I sympathise with your desire for a different style of play but I suggest that even with a different manager with this squad of players I doubt they would suit fast open attacking football.
To change we will need funding, different players and a different manager and I can’t see that happening ,in the meantime we have to make the most of what we have.
How do you think our club can bring about the change in style you and probably all of us wish for given our fund availability and still keep us in the league in the next 12 months?

Being a Crystal Palace Supporter means supporting the club as a whole not any individual. Obviously people have their likes and dislikes that is just human nature but to slag of our manager the way this forum is doing is not supporting Crystal Palace.

My point was if you want to watch better football go and watch the clubs with mega money that can afford players costing £70 million plus.

No, they didn’t.

At Old Trafford we had;

- 29% possession
- 5 shots to Utd’s 22
- 1 corner to Utd’s 8.

Ayew scored with our first touch in their box in the 32nd minute.

Southampton had;

- 52% possession
- 9 shots to Utd’s 8
- 6 corners to Utd’s 4

So so disingenuous.

The only points they have dropped at home this season have been against us and Southampton, we had more opportunities only we didn't actually manage to get shots away or play broke down because of our awful passing (Southampton the same) after 32 mins Southampton had had only one other attempt at moan.u goal and yes looking at the stats it looks a lot different from the actual game in which moan.u should have won with their clear cut chances, also moan.u were 2-1 up after 23 mins and having failed to see them off allowed Southampton to gain confidence as the second half went on, our situation was very different moan.u didn't score until the 89th min.

How can we possibly know whether this team could play a different style or not, we have played the same defensive formation for three years so no-one really knows. The one thing I would say is, we would struggle to play a high pressing game because of the age of the players and the fact they have to play week in week out without a break because they are the only ones that are ever picked.

I don’t accept this team has only one way of playing.
Last season I witnessed us winning at Arsenal with Benteke and Zaha playing together up front.
We played more directly and their defence couldn’t handle them.
It also meant Zaha didn’t spend most of his time defending.
What’s wrong with two up front on occasions and getting the ball forward quicker rather than just passing it backwards and sidewards in our own half as we do in most games?
It’s not rocket science.

What, so being critical of a style of play, a dire string of results and the manager responsible for it is not permitted any more? Unbelievable, this country gets more and more woke in its thinking every day. We will probably not be allowed season tickets soon unless we sign a waiver in favour of the current management structure.

I think you shot yourself in the foot there.

Reidewald is by far our most gifted player and someone to build a team around when we add players.

Our winning goal at moan.u was in the same way that Southampton scored their first wasn't it with Pogba losing cntrol of the ball, why was it a fluke? ..Ayew scored his and our first of the season that day he did it brilliantly I thought no luck in it at all including van Aanholt's.

Admittedly, I was working through my thoughts as I was writing that.

Man U were all over us when Ayew scored, it was an excellent goal and well taken, but we were lucky not to be be several down by that point, but you need the rub of the green in those matches and he got the tactics right for that kind of game. Not many teams would have pressed for a winner in the way they did after they equalised. It was a brave way of playing, which ultimately didn't work and we took advantage. Roy then hasn't changed those tactics for the rest of the season, irrispective of the opposition, no matter how many times it hasn't worked.

That game against Grimsby was a long time ago and my memory has mostly blocked it out. I took to friends who hadn't been to a game before, they were very impressed with our loud, loyal, support especially given the performance. From it I seem to recall we were getting shots away, but still set up cautiously an against a non-league team with 10 players.

Similarly, Hodgson did the same as England manager against weaker sides, which lead to a record that didn't look too bad in terms of results but it was a misrible period. In countrast, Southgate came along and decided that against the likes of Panama, we'd play two recognised centre backs and one full back in the back 3, plus one holding midfielder he realised we didn't really need to defend if we could overload their defence.

If Roy's really cunning, he'd play an experimental team against Man U. Chances are they'd get destroyed and he'd use it to justify to his critics that Reidewald and Meyer aren't good enough.

Why would he do that, he has done a miraculous job with the squad, how can we be so awful with backing a manager that is Palace through and through. We can beat Moan.U tonight they were poor at the end against Southampton who I thought looked extremely average with some dreadful passing and we can beat Wolves in the same way we beat them last season, Spurs look awful.

We should back our manager.

And that’s why I’m backing him and always have to date. However, if we lose 8 on the bounce then serious questions have to be asked. One day Roy will lose his magic - every manager does, which is why they walk away from the game eventually.

My preference is to grab a minimum of 5 points in next 3 games, get the season over and done with and start again with Roy. Anything less than that I won’t argue with him leaving ... it’s a results game all said and done.

As these players played well under Roy it would be reasonable to say that they have dropped their performances for them not to be playing well now. If you are saying that the reason they are not playing well now is because of Roy then can you suggest a manager who we can realistically get that would change our style with this group of players and bring the same success as Roy with all the financial constraints he has to work under?

I’ve no idea what you’re on about, but anyone who watched the game yesterday would agree Southampton were impressive and approached the game with a very different style to ours. United are also a very different prospect now to when we played at the start of the season.

Southampton in terms of recruitment, youth development and indeed tactics and playing style are a fantastic example to follow.

If you can’t see the difference between what Southampton did yesterday and what we do every week, you’re not living in reality.
