We remain in the PL despite our style of football rather than because of it. That style has run it’s course and I do not believe it will be successful next season. I’d also prefer not to watch that style for another season. That is a ridiculous statement. It's the style of football that has seen us accumulate our highest points tally in the Premier League and kept us there under Hodgson. We'll see how successful it proves next season. I do agree that the style of play is not good to watch and while it continues to keep us afloat in the Premier League I don't see SP rushing to change anything.

Backing a manager regardless of performance is just silly - anyone still making out criticisms of Hodgson are unjustified has got their head in the sand... fair enough if you don’t think it warrants a sacking yet, but there are glaring holes which undeniably deserve criticism. It will be interesting to compare Saints performance v United yesterday with ours... I thought they were excellent on the whole; pressed aggressively and racked up more possession, more shots, more shots on target and more corners than the home side. Also thoroughly entertaining to watch. Do people consider Southampton’s squad so superior to ours that we couldn’t dream of doing that? Is it so far fetched for us to approach a game like that? Southampton like the "Pressing game" whereas we adopt a different approach. The average age of their starting 11 against Man Utd was around 23 and two of their subs who were introduced into the fray were 19.

Certainly soporific and turgid at times but we will be in the PL again next season so as far as the 'Board' is concerned the end has justified the means."Happy days" for them.

I wonder if the Hodgson supporters would take a similar view of his abilities if they observed another club or country turning in performances under him like we were witnessing every week.

No, they didn’t. At Old Trafford we had; - 29% possession Ayew scored with our first touch in their box in the 32nd minute. Southampton had; - 52% possession So so disingenuous.

Perhaps with fans being so disillusioned at this time the club (Parish) needs to issue a press release - the old vote of confidence in Hodgson but word it in a way explaining how the club will go forward into next season. Just to put minds at rest as I’m sure he is aware of the discomfort amongst fans at the moment? It can only get worse with upcoming games against inform sides? This Thursday could be the nail in the coffin for Hodgson - Perhaps Parish is awaiting the result?

The Man U game was a fluke. Even though I would say 3 defencive midfielders would be the correct choice against them. Ayew scoring with our first chance then a sucker punch whilst they were hunting for a winner. We beat 10 men Aston Villa 1-0 with them having a late goal ruled out by VAR. It wasn't impressive. Against Everton we left Zaha on the bench. Effectively taking off one attacking option for another. Meyer was kept out by Pickford a couple of times. If he was that bad, then Camerasa was sat on the bench as an unused sub. He got 10 minutes v Sheffield United. That Grimsbey game was a Hodgson special harking back to the days when he bored everyone off watching England. The only player who looked half decent that game was Reidewald in the holding midfield position. But its a mystery as to why you'd only play 1 striker against a team who are going to shove everyone behind the ball. Having said that, we did have over 30 shots, it's a bit of a freak occourance. Had an early one gone in it might have been a completely different story.
I think you shot yourself in the foot there. Reidewald is by far our most gifted player and someone to build a team around when we add players. Our winning goal at moan.u was in the same way that Southampton scored their first wasn't it with Pogba losing cntrol of the ball, why was it a fluke? ..Ayew scored his and our first of the season that day he did it brilliantly I thought no luck in it at all including van Aanholt's.

Broadly I agree, but it’s largely irrelevant when looking at a performance like yesterday. Their success came from how they approached the game, not any individual moment/player.

I do not disagree with you, but sadly Roy is limited by the options available and his objective and responsibility has always been to keep us in the PL, now we are safe then for this year, there is still place money to play for, it's the players that have not performed in the last few games they do deserve criticism, they seem tied and to some extent disinterested and thinking of their holidays, that all may be down of course to the number of games in a short space of time, the heat in the summertime and probably some age related problems like the Cahill injury for example and of course disrupted training regimes and lack of match fitness due to C-19. These are all valid points to consider. Our real problem is that we have not really spent that much on strengthening the team or succession planning which has to be down to the board and Freeman especially the latter because as DOF he should be looking at targets for the club months in advance of transfer windows opening instead it has been pretty much Parish and him only getting really active in the last 24 hrs of any window and bemoaning because they cannot get deals over the line!.Let's all hope that is not repeated in this coming window.

And I wonder how you define being a '' Hodgson supporter ''. I and a few others on here have stoutly defended him because we understand the mechanics behind how the club is being run. All the criticism levelled at Roy's playing style is all well and good but nothing will change while it is achieving Parish's '' ground zero '' of keeping the club in the Premier League. Roy has no reason to change. It's keeping him in his £2.5m a year job - what would you do ?? Brighton dispensed with Hughton for the same reason - playing style. ' Potterball ' hasn't achieved much, Brighton had to change their style back again to squeeze a few points out and they have been fortunate that up to last weekend, the bottom three have looked hopeless. So a change in style doesn't guarantee anything and that's where Parish's thinking is in my opinion.
