Drugs normally take around 10 years to get from testing, development to final production to the public. A lot of people still remember the Thalidomide scandal, and some victims are still paying the price.
This drug is already in use against malaria and it can't be patented. As for Thalidomide....Today's standards are a direct consequence from those times. It shouldn't be able to happen again if standards are followed.

If you close the schools then many parents will need to pack up work in order to stay at home and look after them and those parents will include half of the nursing force as well as all of the other essential services. The alternative is to let the grandparents look after the kids and we know where that will lead There is a simple solution to that. Just keep those children in school. The vast majority will be at home so you limit the exposure risk.

I just hope Talking Pictures don't start showing all those apocalyptic b&w early 60s films starring Edward Judd

As it is elsewhere. "where would the people be taken, see my answer above" What answer? The remark about people using their initiative and finding solutions and not problems. There is a way. It just needs to be found. Where have I said they are not following guidance? I stated there was a risk to them. You didn't but your approach comes over to me as that of the "won't do that" Union leader rather than the "can do" attitude that is needed at this time. Enough of this. I can't be bothered arguing with someone who either lives in a bubble or is just a troll. I suspect (although I am sure you will deny it) that you have had problems with the HO/Immigration regarding family memnbers and you have no time what so ever for them. The absolute reverse actually. One of the most heart warming experiences of my life was provided at Heathrow Immigration by a Border Control officer. It was my wife's initial entry after getting her spousal visa. Getting the visa was a huge battle with the Home Office, who initially refused, only for the decision to be overturned on appeal by an immigration Judge. It took over a year. So she was very nervous when presenting herself at immigration control, with me beside her, even though I could have entered via the bio booth. The officer, with a broad Scottish accent, after examining her passport, smiled broadly at her and said "Welcome to Britain. I hope you will be very happy here". She burst into tears and has never forgotten him. I could have kissed him! On a subsequent entry, when we had been abroad for one day short of the permitted 6 months, she was asked to go to an interview room whilst her visa was checked. She was treated with complete respect. So I have a high regard for the officers!

That's interesting....is it wet this time of year there? With lower standard of living countries there will be a lot of inter generational abodes. If the weather doesn't make a difference it makes things pretty bad......I guess we might as well lock the oldies away and just get on with it. Edited by Stirlingsays (18 Mar 2020 6.28pm) It's actually coming into the hottest months. With Chinese being the biggest travellers to thailand I'm very surprised at the few cases they have and only 1 death. Seems very strange!

I was not aware of any such limit. The visa is for an initial 30 months after which further leave to remain is granted, so long as you have behaved yourself, sat another English test (our nearest being in Cardiff) and shelled out lots of dosh, including the NHS surcharge (which is ironic as she works for the NHS). FLR is now known as "pre-settled" status. After another 30 months indefinite leave to remain is granted (settled status). Another English test, a "life in the UK" test (which many Brits would fail) and a shed load of dosh. The 6 month thing is because she is not allowed to be away from the UK for more that 6 months concurrently without transgressing her visa conditions. If she did a whole new application would be required and that can only be applied for abroad. The Home Office changed the rules whilst we were out of the country. It used to be that it was 6 months in any year, so by straddling 2 years you could be away for almost 12 months and not risk your visa. Now it's 6 in any 12 months, which makes more sense. She was fine but they needed to check. I don't think any of us really know how any sector, public or not, will operate during this crisis. I have been very impressed so far with the attitude shown by the NHS and their flexibility and level headedness. I am even having to start to revise, on one level at least, my opinion of Johnson. He seems to have escaped from the shadow of Cummings for the moment and is appearing more human as a consequence.

I was very pro Boris then once advisers started getting fired plus the Sajid Javid affair I started to have my doubts but he seems to have quickly grown into a very capable leader
