Allison was a charismatic figure.
He would sit in the Directors Box during games as if he was an Emperor.
I remember he brought in Peter Taylor, then a very talented young winger, and played a Scottish hard man Roy Barry at right back behind him, in case any of the opposition ‘took liberties’ with Taylor.
I recall one game where Taylor skated past three defenders to set up a goal with a piece of outrageous skill.
As Taylor trotted back to the halfway line for kick off Allison shouted from the Director’s Box to attract Taylor’s attention.
Alllison simply gave him a thumbs up and bawled ‘Magic.’
Taylor seemed to grow ten feet tall and had a magnificent game and a very good spell with Palace.
Allison loved working with top players but also improved lesser players like Stewart Jump and Derek Jeffries.
A chaotic spell in the club’s history , but a lot of fun.

I have a friend who knows Roy Barry quite well and he’s still going strong. He’s something of a hero to older Dunfermline fans; he was captain of their cup winning side in 1968.

Good to hear this about Roy Barry.

Certainly a robust player and Alex Ferguson described him as the hardest player he has faced.

"Big Mal" was a larger-than-life charismatic character who had tasted success as Man C manager but alas during his time with us we went from the old Division 1 to Division 3.

We did have that wonderful FA cup run whilst he was in charge beating Chelsea and Leeds along the way to the semi-final at Stamford Bridge when we were defeated 2-0 by Southampton who had Mel Blyth in their line-up.

Who can forget Allison on the pitch before the Leeds game at Elland Road game goading supporters by raising his hand to predict the score and of course that 'Fedora' ! A blue fedora is amongst my Palace memorabilia!

I met him at the final game at Ayresome Park. The next table along had Bob Mortimer and Sean Hughes.

Allison signed a bottle of Middlesbro' rouge for the missus. We kept it until our first was born to use as a toast. It was dreadful

That brings back memories that I had long forgotten.

When I lived in the North East I used to work for the ex chairman of Middlesbrough who had become personna non grata and wishing to keep a low profile so I became the front man for his companies.

I went to the opening of the Ayresome Park restaurant and sat at lunch with a number of Middlesbrough fans including the chairman of a local recruitment company that I was doing some work for but had never met before.

He was chatting a lot and holding court and I rather naively asked him whether he used to play to be met by grins all round from everyone else. His name was George Hardwick and not only did he used to captain Middlesbrough but he was also captain of England too, although well before my time

The nickname that gets used the most must be Leicester City. Commentators seem contractually obligated to mention Foxes several times.

Yes, you're right. Obviously as instructed by Lineker.

Like everybody else I don't recall any fuss really, but the club was in a bad way at that time and I think any changes were generally viewed positively. Personally I'd have preferred to have kept the Claret and Blue for historical or continuity reasons, but I accept there's no going back now that the Red and Blue is fully established. And they did herald some exciting times!

I remember the changes well as I’d been going since ‘67.
No one has mentioned that by changing from (imho) dull claret and blue also worn by West Ham, Burnley, Villa etc to red and blue our colours immediately became unique as nobody else played in red and blue then. Changing to Eagles did seem a bit strange at the time, but then glaziers is hardly a cool nickname is it...
I’d be quite disappointed to revert to the old colours and nickname, but I’m sure I’d get over it. What would be fantastic would be to be acknowledged as the oldest professional club in the world, CPFC 1861.

What connection does an Eagle have with Palace?
I've been watching Palace since 1958 when they had the 'Crystal Palace' on their shirts.
In my opinion it should have stayed.
You can't imagine The Gunners changing their nickname.
You associate the name with Woolwich ARSENAL.
Sorry, If it ain't broke ...... and all that!!!
By the way, I loved our real Eagle! Lovely BIG bird.

Having been a fan since the late 60's I have fond memories of those days and also don't recall much fuss about the rebranding. But why do we have an eagle? I think it was originally meant to be a phoenix, as in a phoenix rising from the ashes of Crystal Palace. I have no evidence to back this up, it is just a gut feeling.

There is a YouTube clip of a BBC street interview in Liverpool where a man is asked,
“Do you remember the derby match at Goodison Park in 1967?”
“Yes. I played in it”
“Oh. Could you remind me of your name?”
“Tommy Lawrence”.

As a teenager back then (I'm 70 now) 'Glaziers' always sounded naff and stuffy to me. "Play up, you Glaziers!"
It was the sixties, everything got turned upside down, and that included our nickname. No supporter ever referred to the club as 'the Glaziers'.

My first match was 1965, FA Cup, Palace 3 - Forest 1. I don't think anyone used the name 'Glaziers'. "Come on you glaziers" doesn't really work does it.
