I dont think people are turning against Meyer at all... I think some people, myself included just pointed out that Meyer looked out of his depth yesterday and faded quite badly after a very good first 15-20 minutes.

I'm not sure if the OP is Meyers mum or another family member but he takes it very personally if people criticise Meyer and totally over reacted and said I was 'picking' on Meyer yesterday when I raised this point.

Nobody... no matter how good they are is immune from criticism.. it's not picking on someone or turning against them it's just simply saying what you felt of there performance.

He was played out of position. He’s a central attacking no 10 type player and that’s all he can play.

Except for the whole of last season when he was a very deep playmaker

A lot of clutching at straws going on here IMO.

The squad desperately lacks attacking quality / flair and irrespective of what position he's played in Meyer hasn't thus far looked like the player to bring it.

Roy's been dealt a s*** hand with the changes to the squad over the summer.

Did you watch the Arsenal match?

Yes, he did well. Lively and brought a bit of energy when he came on. Also a rare moment of quality with his volley against Wolves. But I didn't see him beat anyone or open up their defence. Noticed he got shrugged off the ball very easily twice in the middle when he had posession.

Not saying he's a bad player but he's being talked up and isn't a replacement for RLC or Cabaye and I've seen little to suggest he's going to create or score a lot of goals.

On the evidence all this season is we have a chronic lack of attacking quality. Roy is doing a good job with very weak options and has been let down by players bottling it in front of goal at key moments.

If we play 3 in the middle and can’t afford to have one player (Meyer) who might offer a bit More than blocking tackles and shielding our defence ( if we play 3 like that , then we are using 8 to defend and 3 to attack) , we might aswell call it a day.

A lot of people said RLC wasn't good enough when he first signed for us complaining that they couldn't see what all the fuss was about. After he was given more time on the pitch he grew into his role and ended up playing a key role in our survival. Personally I can see the quality that Meyer possesses and I just think he needs a run of games to get up to speed with the PL. I think Roy wants to accommodate him, hence playing without a recognised striker against Chelsea.

I do think people's patience levels are insanely short and in Meyer's case I don't even think he has even played badly. I also think like when Cabaye signed the hype that preceded the signing means that some people think he is supposed to me some sort of Messiah and his failure to live up to that means he is being crucified.

Yup. I remember the RLC comments as well and it seems to be the same for Meyer. Regarding his physicality I don't see a problem, its an outdated view in my eyes as the PL is full of slight players who are able to use their ball control to get out of tight areas or draw a foul from it.

Almost every game Meyer has come on, he has given the opposition more to think about than just Wilf e.g Watford away, Arsenal or Wolves. I personally believe he'd flourish as the no.10 but if Roy used him in the same role he did on Sunday against weaker opposition with Wilf drifting out wide also, I can see this working as they seem to have a good connection for such little time together.

Cabaye came in as a creative player who could score goals, he did very little of either but he kept the ball and kept us ticking over and we are now really missing him. Not all players have to either score or create goals to be a real asset to the team.

That's a sensible post that sums Meyer up nicely. He is in my opinion a very good player, but as you also allude to, he is never going to be a Cabaye replacement. If anyone is going to try and fill those boots out of our current squad it has to be Reidewald or Kouyate, neither of which currently appear able to.

Perhaps we could do with a Cesc Fabregas, or a Pablo Hernandez to provide that creative spark.

Perhaps. However, we signed Meyer, who is quality as far as I can tell, and as far as the much better informed than me pundits say. If we are going to pay all this money for him then we should play to his strengths.

I question whether we can find a system that puts Zaha and Meyer centre stage and it might be a Gerrard / Lampard type of problem.

I have confidence that we will get it right, but what “right” is is beyond me.

Gerrard and Lampard played almost the same position but in a part of the pitch where you can have 2 of them. Zaha and Meyer don’t play in the same position or only the same position and with 3 in front of a defensive midfield partnership there’s room there.
